Stavo guardando "Tutti pazzi per Mary" l'ultima volta che mi sono imbattuto nel simpatico faccione di Jonathan Richman, chiamato a narrare le improbabili avventure di Ben Stiller e Cameron Diaz, con la sua chitarra acustica, testi che narrano una quotidanità mai banale e la sua voce nasale.
Unica nota stonata: nella versione italiana del film, genialmente, la voce di Richman è stata doppiata. Immagino che a Bob Dylan queste cose non capitino, ma transeat.
Jonathan Richman era il leader maximo dei Modern Lovers e questo debutto è probabilmente l'apice musicale, o perlomeno il disco più genuinamente rock & roll della sua ultratrentennale carriera, per la presenza di alcuni suoni proto punk e parecchie anticipazioni wave.
La gestazione di questo album fu un incubo: i demo di alcune canzoni furono registrati nel 1972 da John Cale, mentre altre tracks furono incise con l'ausilio del produttore Kim Fowley, ma i risultati non soddisfarono il perfezionista Richman e furono pubblicate solo nel 1976 dalla Beserkley quasi contro la volontà del cantante.
I Modern Lovers sono il perfetto incrocio tra la scarna visione musicale dei primi Velvet Underground, il sound dei Doors privato però della crudezza del blues e una componente "X", che potremmo chiamare personalità o, più banalmente, capacità di scrivere canzoni senza tempo.
Le filastrocche di Richman hanno un andamento sbilenco, costruite su pochi riff di chitarra ripetuti incessantemente, ma il sound viene rimpolpato da tastiere doorsiane, da alcuni omaggi al rock delle origini (in "Someone I Care About" si sentono addirittura gli handclaps) e la voce del Nostro indeciso tra un approccio declamatorio o parlato.
La critica "seria" considera l'opener "Roadrunner" l'apice compositivo di questo Lp, ma è un po' come giudicare un libro dalla copertina. L'amore per la psichedelia pervade pure la successiva "Astral World", mentre man mano che si avanza nel disco incominciano ad apparire fantasmi velvettiani, come in "I'm Straight", nella più free form "Pablo Picasso" e nella tribale "Someone I Care About".
Alcune variazioni di registro si notano nelle nervose "Dignified And Old" e "Modern World" non lontane filologicamente dal "punk" di Richard Hell & The Voidoids, nei toni quasi cantautoriali di "Girl Friend" e nella spensierata "Government Center", una specie di Beach Boys in visita all'inferno.
Ho lasciato per ultimo il capolavoro assoluto dell'opera, quella "Hospital" donata al gruppo dal tastierista Jerry Harrison, successivamente nei Talking Heads: inizio in slow play, parlato di Richman sostenuto da tastiere liquide, che creano il pathos prima dell'esplosione catartica del ritornello, come nelle migliori composizioni di Patti Smith.
Consiglio questo capolavoro a chi è desideroso di scoprire le pietre miliari del rock, ai punk dal cuore tenero, agli alternativi meno alternativi e sopratutto ai doppiatori distratti di film americani.
