Attendevo l’uscita di questo album con particolare interesse. Ascoltando i primi EP e vedendoli suonare dal vivo mi aveva incuriosito come i The Music, ennesima band di diciottenni, producesse un sound fortemente influenzato tanto dal rock degli anni ’70 che dalla scena inglese di fine ’80 inizi ’90. L’omonimo disco conferma quanto il background musicale dei quattro sia ignaro dell’esistenza di un decennio caratterizzato dai Nirvana e dalle accoppiate Oasis/Blur e Radiohead/Buckley che pur tanti rockettari della nuova generazione hanno generato. Gia’ l’iniziale ”The Dance” ci indica ben altre strade. Fortissimi gli echi di Stone Roses, Charlatans, Verve e Primal Scream. Robert Harvey canta ricordando in maniera assai convincente ora Ian Brown ora Tim Burgess mentre la sezione ritmica costruisce un energico tappeto sonoro su cui i riff di Nutter, che avra’ suonato fino alla morte Jimmy Page e John Squire, si trovano a perfetto agio.”The People” e’ il singolo che per energia e facilità d’ascolto ha lanciato i The Music in heavy-rotation sulle radio, “Turn Out The Light”e “Take The Long Road And Walk It” pagano un forte tributo ai Led Zeppelin mentre le conclusive “Disco” e “Too High” prima di uniformarsi per forza trascinante al resto del lavoro hanno un inizio che molto ricorda l’Ashcroft di “Northern Soul”. Dopo il clamore suscitato quando erano ancora perfetti sconosciuti i The Music superano a pieni voti la difficile prova dell’album di debutto. La sopravvivenza nel mondo del rock ora si fa più dura : la formula di un sound così lontano da quanto ci hanno fatto ascoltare in questi anni le giovani leve e che ha trascinato in alto il gruppo, è un prodotto di facile scadenza e potrebbe trasformarsi, già con il prossimo lavoro, da fattore sorpresa a minestra riscaldata.
