Se "Waterloo" del '74 rappresenta un ottimo esordio, e "Arrival" del '76 l'apice della maturazione artistica, l'album omonimo del '75 rappresenta per gli ABBA la conferma della consacrazione a livello mondiale.
Dopo il grande successo di "Waterloo", infatti, molti li avevano etichettati come una band-meteora, un gruppo che avrebbe piazzato un paio di hits per poi finire subito nel dimenticatoio. Con "ABBA", invece, il gruppo non solo bissò il successo dell'esordio, ma lo superò, confermandosi come 1° gruppo pop del pianeta in termini di fama. Si tratta anche dell'album più rock della formazione svedese, (probabilmente il più complesso dal punto di vista musicale), che si apre con "Mamma mia", (prima super-hit tratta dall'album), dal ritmo sostenuto e allegro che vi sfido a non portare con il dito o coi piedi mentre lo ascoltate; "Hey Hey Helen" si apre con riffoni quasi hard-rock, per poi addolcirsi nel ritornello; a questo punto chiudete gli occhi e fatevi trasportare con la fantasia dal sound reggie-hawaiiano di "Tropical Loveland" sulle spiagge assolate delle Hawaii mentre bevete un cocktail in compagnia di belle indigene coi bloomer addosso; segue la celebre "Sos", splendida ballata che inizia melodica per poi esplodere in un ritornello dal ritmo trascinante, "Man in the middle" è un pezzo funky-pop in cui la voce principale, (cosa rara), è Benny.
Il disco entra nel vivo con le ballate pop "Bang-a-boomerang" e la famosissima "I do, i do, i do, i do". La traccia 8 è la rockeggiante "Rock me", (qui Benny fa di nuovo la 1^ voce), prima dell' "Intermezzo n. 1", breve pezzo strumentale che spezza il ritmo prima del "gran finale", affidato al romantico lento "I've been waiting for you" e a "So Long", trascinante pezzo in perfetto stile rock 'n' roll.
L'elemento caratterizzante di questo e di tutti i dischi degli ABBA è il ritmo spensierato e l'allegria, un'allegria contagiosissima che pervade l'ascoltatore (di qualunque tipo), fin dal primo ascolto: non dovrete sorprendervi, dunque, se dopo un paio di ascolti, anche il più estremista dei metallaroni si ritroverà (suo malgrado!), a canticchiare sotto la doccia le canzoni degli ABBA...
