La furia del rock più tirato e carico di groove aveva travolto gli anni '60. Nel decennio a seguire, insieme a chi portò avanti la stessa filosofia estremizzandola, ci furono personaggi che ebbero la grande idea - oltre che l’enorme capacità tecnica – di unire le digressioni classico-melodiche con le nuove tendenze del decennio appena trascorso. Come direbbe Gianna la guardarobiera: mettere la cravatta a Jimi Hendrix ed i pantaloni a zampa a Beethoven, mentre Lester Bangs direbbe: Progressive Rock.
E già qua molti si sono spaventati, perché il Prog fa paura, da molti catalogato sommariamente come un qualcosa di non proprio divertente, però oddio, c’è Prog e Prog, non tutto suona alla stessa maniera, ed a volte le catalogazioni ci fanno cadere in errore.
L’esordio dei sei ragazzetti inglesi capitanati dai tre fratelli Shulman, detto papale papale: "il primo disco dei Gentle Giant", è senza dubbio un album che sfugge alla classica catalogazione di Prog. Non voglio appesantirvi con le solite descrizioni celestiali, vi basti sapere che questo è un lavoro che racchiude in se il groove del rock'n'roll, la melodia classica e le digressioni psichedeliche del periodo. Il fan della prog bacchettona considera questo disco come un'opera immatura del gruppo, e da un punto di vista puramente progressivo, è la verità; ma grazie a dio non siamo tutti bacchettoni, e valutando questo album al di fuori di ogni genere, è senza dubbio un'opera che può essere considerata come il perfetto passaggio da Rock a Prog Rock avvenuto nel 1970. Non è affatto cosa da poco.
Vorrei iniziare ad ascoltare Prog, ma da cosa posso iniziare?
Da questo. Volete un Because per farlo? Molto meglio Why Not? (5:30).
