Dopo la pubblicazione di Stationary Traveller (1984) i Camel, guidati dal solo superstite Latimer, devono attraversare sette anni difficili prima di poter produrre un nuovo album. Fortunatamente con la costituzione di una nuova base operativa a Mt. View (CA) e la creazione della Camelproductions, Andy Latimer riesce a pubblicare nel 1991 "Dust And Dreams".
Il disco è un concept album composto da sedici tracce per un totale di quarantasette minuti e cinquantacinque secondi. Personalmete ho trovato questo disco particolarmente riuscito sia artisticamente che tecnicamente. La struttura del concept è convincente e ogni brano risulta gradevole e mai scontato. Sostanzialmente è un album strumentale con solamente quattro brani cantati. Il disco trae ispirazione da "The Grapes of Wrath" di John Steinbeck. Il titolo del CD è decisamente carico di significati e nell'ottimo booklet (printed on recycled paper) si trovano alcune foto artistiche in bianco e nero tratte dalla "Library of Congress" che ne rafforzano il significato. In particolare, la copertina, che raffigura un bambino e la retrocopertina con un vecchio che sta piegandosi per raccogliere un sacco. Due momenti diversi della vita di un essere umano, quello della giovinezza, carica di sogni e speranze con tanto tempo a disposizione e quello della vecchiaia quando molti sogni sono svaniti e il tempo disponibile sta volgendo al termine...
Spesso il viaggio della vita che una persona dovrà fare sarà proprio quello di realizzare dei sogni, di cercare (o inventarsi) un lavoro, trovare una casa, crearsi una famiglia, crescere un figlio. Alle volte purtroppo capita un brutto evento e quello che si può fare è ricominciare tutto da capo oppure, "stringere i denti" e continuare fino alla fine del tempo...
Anche questo CD si mantiene su alti livelli compositivi come tutta la discografia Camel (o quasi). Il tono dell'opera è malinconico ed estremamente profondo nei concetti. Il "tocco" chitarristico di Latimer è sempre commovente e convincente e anche se il suo modo di cantare non risulta particolarmente brillante è sempre sincero e carico di passione. Come sempre non ci sono tecnicismi "mostruosi", non ci sono assoli chilometrici, tutta la musica è calibrata e dosata perfettamente. Vorrei comunque segnalare fra tutti i brani presenti sul disco "Go West" ballad semplice e commovente cantata da Andy. "Mother Road" pezzo più ritmato cantato da Andy con ottimi assoli di chitarra. La stupenda "Rose of Sharon" cantata con voce delicata e raffinata da Mae.Mckenna. Indimenticabile anche "End of The Line" cantata da Andy con eccellenti assoli di chitarra di impostazione Blues. Questo forse è il brano che preferisco. "Cotton Camp", "Broken Banks" e "Hopless Anger" sono validissimi strumentali con chitarra e batteria in evidenza.
Un disco meno immediato rispetto ad altri lavori dei Camel e che necessita di più ascolti per essere apprezzato al meglio ma che con il tempo rimarrà nel cuore molto più a lungo, almeno per me è stato così. Prima di terminare vorrei solo aggiungere due parole per il grande "CameLatimer" e cioè: "NON ARRENDERTI!".
