Artwork tipicamente power per un album completamente Hard Rock\Heavy Metal. Un album che al primo ascolto ho subito definito incredibilmente mediocre. Non che non sappiano suonare, anzi smentire la loro tecnica sarebbe un'azzardo, poichè venticinque anni di carriera e successo non sono pochi. Ma mi chiedevo, per quale ragione un ragazzo dovrebbe comprare nel 1996 della musica Hard Rock che non la si può minimamente paragonare agli ormai blasonati pionieri del genere. Questo fù il mio primo pensiero.
Ma riascoltandolo oggi, a distanza di tempo, penso a una cosa, che il rock Heavy è pur sempre un genere, e che chissà quanti appassionati accoglie. E Allora che male c'è se questi vogliono proporre il loro genere preferito ? Bravura strumentale c'è n'è da vendere e il fatto che non propongano niente di originale (a parte qualche fioca venatura rock'n roll nascosta in mezzo agli assoli...) non può voler dire che nel contesto l'album sia scarso. Anzi, mettendomi per un attimo nei panni di che non è come me, quindi non è propenso al sofisticato e innovativo ma è appassionato di dura roccia anni 70, stile USA Jeans e cola, questo cd lo si potrebbe definire una vera e propria figata. Insomma quello che vogliono proporre è proposto bene e con qualche consentita ricaduto qua e là, ma nel complesso: godibile.
Tanto per incominciare "Down From The Mountain" sarebbe la canzone più che perfetta da avere su una macchina scappottata mentre si sfreccia nei deserti dell'Arizona all'alba, rende proprio l'idea dei Giubbotti Jeans tagliuzzati e dell'occhiale da sole in faccia. L'atmosfera è sempre più contenuta verso l'origine, quindi più diretta all'hard rock che all'Heavy Metal. Belli assoli... ma a volte stufacchiano... Molta grinta, questo si.... ma poi diventa monotona, apprezzabili i cori nei ritornelli che ci stanno benissimo ma è la voce a non far reggere la durata di tutto il cd, percè è estremamente "sufficiente" e non accenna a una minima particolarità, nemmeno a un grido rauco o a uno strillo. "Rolling Thunder" ad esempio è troppo scontata ma lo stesso carina per il suo ripieno di assoli dinamici e travolgenti, anche di tastiera con effetto in pianoforte. La title track "Devil's Canyon" non è assolutamente la canzone più bella dell'album, ma piace per il ritmo dolce e per degli assoli sfrenati di chitarra sul pezzo finale che sembra non chiudersi mai. "Heartless Land" è un altro esempio, di questa canzone spiccano sempre e solo gli assoli, quindi la tecnica più che discreta, qua malinconica. ma "Never Say Never" è proprio bella perchè è molto rock con dei bellissimi giochi di tastiera alla deep purple. "Tatanka" accenna un pò più di cattiveria e grinta e mi fà ricordare molti gli Skid Row e simili a tempi. La più bella e anche la più consigliata secondo me è la danzereccia "Come Hell Or High Water" che oltre ad allacciarsi ai canoni hard rock prende parecchi spunti dal rock'n roll anni 60.
Penso di aver reso abbastanza l'idea; l'album presenta una musica che la si ascolta mentre ci si scuote la testa su e giù e poi anche un pò a destra e sinistra per agitare i capelli, magari brandendo in mano un manico si scopa. Un genere meglio conosciuto come Southern Rock. Non so neanche io se và considerata inevitabile la presenza di una ballata in un album del genere ma "The Look in your eyes" pur essendo un pò troppo sdolcinata mantiene la grazia. Si tratta forse di un necessario intervallo, ma la tensione ritorna con "Eat Your Heart Out" che sembra essere troppo simile alle sette canzoni precedenti. Concludono "The Jounrey" dal ritmo melodico e grintoso e "Dreams Ill Never See" dolce e in chitarra acustica pizzicata.
Considerazioni conclusive: fatevelo prestare da chi ce l'ha ma non compratelo a meno che non siate molto appassionati del genere. Se siete appassionati invece di questo stile country blues rock metal anni 70 e statunitense si potrebbe anrche rilevare fondamentale per voi, ma io non ne assumo la responsabilità solo per essere stato troppo buono nei loro confronti. Penso in oltre che a comporre il 90% della soggettiva dubbiosa qualità sia la voce del cantante, troppo inespressiva, forse se ci fosse stato il cantante dei Twisted Sister nè usciva fuori un vero e proprio capolavoro.
