Le sessions di "Voulez-Vous", nei loro invidiatissimi Polar Studios, furono molto prolifiche per il gruppo svedese. Il disco infatti contiene una serie notevole di brani molto omogenei tra loro che mostrano la personale rielaborazione del duo Andersson-Ulvaeus delle sonorità funky e disco miscelate e amalgamate molto bene, e intelligentemente, con il pop su un solido background classico europeo. Durante le lavorazioni del disco il gruppo si concentra su una serie di brani che diventeranno classici e hit formidabili, "Chiquitita" e "I Have A Dream" per esempio ma anche gioiellini meno noti come l'incredibile "Lovelight".
"Summer Night City" è una delle prime canzoni che vengono messe in cantiere dai quattro negli ultimi mesi del'78, una genesi complessa e non troppo facile. Inizialmente era aperta da una trama di ampio respiro al synt che annunciava il tema musicale del brano, questa introduzione verrà mantenuta per l'esecuzione live insieme al canto iniziale a tre voci. La versione in studio invece presenta subito la potentissima base ritmica pulsante. La canzone si distingue sia per la ritmica decisamente sostenuta ma anche per il canto di Aghetha e Frida che si avvolge come una spirale sulla linea melodica principale, una costruzione veramente interessante perchè non lascia il minimo respiro e spinge in modo molto naturale al ballo più sfrenato.
Il brano non viene incluso nel disco del '79 ma verrà eseguito dal vivo nel tour nord americano insieme ad un altro pezzo velocemente registrato nell'agosto del '79, "Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!", per uno show molto fisico e trascinante documentato anche su pellicola.
