Con un album con un titolo abbastanza insolito, come se una sveglia si fosse incantata, gli And One propongono un nuovo lavoro dopo aver pubblicato un Best of. Ai primi ascolti può sembrare molto commeciale - basti pensare a "Get You Closer", canzone molto piacevole, ma che, a livello lirico, non presenta una grande impegno.
Tuttavia, l'album evoca molto spesso atmosfere ipnotiche e si potrebbe pensare che il ritornello ossessivo di "Get You Closer" si rifaccia a questo tema, esplicitato dalla traccia "Hypnotize", canzone che tratta delll'influenza che uno può avere sull'altro: dopo di tutto, chi controlla chi, chi domina nella coppia?? Il tema dell'ipnosi, del lavaggio di cervello, del resto, lo si ritrova anche nella copertina dell'album: la lampadina attira il nostro sguardo verso quattro nove che sembrano sfilare davanti ai nostri occhi. Anche una canzone più allegra e meno impegnata come "Evil Boys" può suggerire una simile visione a causa di quei "Brainless, aimless..."; "Evil Boys go nowhere...": il benpensante è arrivato e cerca di imporre la sua visione dei fatti grazie a un biasimo che ripete senza sosta.
Con il tema dell'ipnosi si entra in una dimensione fantastica e inquietante e "Und wieder" ne è il miglior esempio. All'inizio è questione di un paesaggio (sole, vento...), si tratta di una canzone che tratta del ciclo della natura; ma ben presto subentra una sensazione di desolazione introdotto dal "Letzte Vogel" (l'ultimo uccello). Sempre su una dimensione più malinconica bisognerebbe segnalare la traccia 7 ("Pray") e la 8 ("Men In Uniform"). Si tratta di sofferenza, di dolore, in un primo tempo grazie a una canzone dalle sonorità industrial ("Pray"), incentrata su motivi religiosi, in un secondo tempo con qualcosa di più simile a una ballata addolorata e struggente. E' vero però che altre canzoni sembrano meno profonde e più leggere. E' il caso di "Pimmelmann" (abbastanza insopportabile, a mio avviso) oppure di "Michael Caine", seria ma anche spensierata; ma soprattutto il discorso vale per "Love & Fingers" che si avvale di di un ritmo contagioso e di un testo scherzoso. Si tratta del pezzo adatto quando si è depressi. L'unica nota negativa dell'album è la sua ultima traccia, "Der erste Schritt": una voce sintetizzata parla su una base molto monotona (siamo ancora nel tema dell'ipnosi?), niente di fenomenale.
Comunque, non lasciamoci ingannare da questo incidente: non sarà per via di due tracce un pò meno riuscite ("Pimmelmann" e "Der erste Schritt") che lo condanneremo. Si tratta di un ottimo album elettronico che, non si limita a giocare con ritmi e sonorità e che sa interessarsi a tematiche profonde.
