C'è stata una voce, di nome Jasper Steverlinck, che a cavallo tra la decade attuale e quella scorsa ha incantato tutti coloro che l'hanno ascoltata. Acuta e suadente, capace d'acuti e di falsetti, androgina ma calda, fu la simbiosi tra le velleità del giovane Freddie Mercury e l'espressività melodrammatica d'una vocalist di cool jazz.
Dopo che la sua band, gli Arid, esordì, nel 1999, col meraviglioso "At The Close Of Every Day", per altri mercati intitolato "Little Things Of Venom", nel 2002 nasce "All Is Quiet Now". E' già il titolo a spiegare che, diversamente dal debutto, questo è un disco più lineare, meno farcito e meno pretenzioso; inferiore se vogliamo, però meglio focalizzato sulle melodie.
Stupisce come si sia riusciti a riprodurre i toni del jazz vecchio stile, ed a sposarli alla "esplosività" del rock; a mescolare intimità "cool" alla genetica platealità delle chitarre: il vecchio jazz si sussurra, il rock è a squarciagola... Su tutte, l'imperidbile "You Are".
Da contrappunto fanno pochi brani "del tutto" rock, "primaverili" quale la splendida "The Everlasting Change" oppure potenti ed epici, che provano - inutilmente - a mettere a dura prova la voce di Steverlinck e che, al contrario, finiscono per essere il perfetto banco di prova, per Jasper, che è libero di esprimere la potenza della sua voce. E più in alto va, meglio sembra rendere: non per niente gli Arid sono conosciuti in Italia per la potenza dei ritornelli di "Me And My Melody", del disco precedente, in cui Steverlinck arriva fino in cielo.
Una voce sempre in primo piano su una musica senza dubbio vicina al pop rock del tempo ed alle bands più famose della loro terra d'origine, il Belgio, ma più melodica, se vogliamo più ruffiana, perché più romantica. Una voce che magari talora eccede in barocchismi fini a se stessi, ma che il più delle volte è una polvere argentea, che si posa sui brani degli Arid e li rende splendenti. E splendidi. Una voce che è teatrale, che ti introduce nell'atmosfera ideale, che ti trasmette lo stato d'animo necessario. Che ti sa placare, riconciliare... Olio che serve a farti scivolare di dosso le brutture, e che ti porta dentro un giardino segreto d'emozioni.
Tutto è quieto, adesso.
