Questo live, ultimo capitolo della breve storia degli Arid, è semplicemente uno dei migliori unplugged della musica recente.
In primis per le loro canzoni: rock romantico sentimentale e melodico, cui ben s'addice questa veste acustica, oppure brani che "sconfinano", anche nelle versioni da studio, nel territorio del new acoustic movement... Ed ancora dell'autentico cool jazz-rock (basta "You Are"?), od anche, in alcuni brani propostici nel live ma in un numero ben maggiore all'interno dei loro due dischi d'inediti, un singolare marriage tra tormentato e languido, caustico e quieto. A volte le strofe sono "restless" ed i ritornelli melodici e rilassati ("Marooned" e "Silent Reproach"); in "Me And My Melody", invece, le strofe tristi e sonnolente sono accoppiate ad un ritornello che è una tempesta: battezzerei volentieri questo gusto compositivo "sorelle Bronte rock", o "Cime Tempestose rock", ma non ho ancora deciso quale dei due termini adottare.
In seconda battuta, per il cantato di Jasper Steverlinck. Dove il brano è chitarra e voce, non c'è pressoché bisogno di chitarra; quando i ritornelli sono supermelodici non t'accorgi quasi della presenza degli strumenti; quando sono epici, in assenza di chitarroni elettrici e tastiere orchestrali, l'epicità la fornisce lui e lui soltanto. Nei momenti più delicati si fa aiutare dalle poche note di un pianoforte; in quelli più docili, si fa assecondare da un arpeggio d'acustica.
Anche istrione, nel finale di "Dearly Departed" ci infila falsetti impervi ed urla null'affatto sguaiate, "Get Up, Stand Up" di Marley e la lallazione di Kylie Minogue in "Can't Get You Out Of My Head"; in "The Body Of You" chiude con un verso di "Say What You Want" dei Texas. In "The Everlasting Change", viaggia così genuino che per un rock così non serve neppure la chitarra; nella struggente "Little Things Of Venom" non riesci a concentrarti sulle pur interessanti trame sotto al cantato.
Inutile dire che mancano parecchio a chi vi scrive. Voi non fateveli mancare. Per raggiungerli, fino in Belgio, non so in auto, ma già col mulo ci metti pochissimo. Buona lettura anche della rece, con tanto di samples, di "At The Close Of Every Day", scritta nel lontano 2005 da Samterra/Samuel.
