I Bad Brains sono stati un grande gruppo di hardcore punk.
Fin qui nulla di strano, ma al neofita aprire l’album e trovarsi di fronte quattro afroamericani con i dreadlocks che arrivano loro al sedere, converrete con me, può far venire qualche dubbio. La risposta è la più ovvia: i "cervelli cattivi”, sono rastafari e punk. Semplice, no?
Uscito nel 1983 Rock for Light è un album seminale, fondamentale per definire i canoni dell’hardcore.
Mai il rock era stato così veloce e così selvaggio. Si perché selvaggio è l’aggettivo più indicato per la musica di Paul “H.R.” Hudson, Dr. Know Darryl Jennifer e Earl Hudson, nativi di Washington (non vi dice niente? Minor Threat, Fugazi...).
"Big Takeover”, "Right Brigade”, "Destroy Babylon”, "Sailin’ On”, "At The Movies” sono inni immarcescibili, caratterizzati da chitarre lancinanti e stacchi mozzafiato, il tutto esasperato dal canto nervoso di Paul Hudson e da testi anti sistema: farebbero venire la voglia di pogare anche al più incallito fan di Claudio Villa.
L’album è impreziosito qua e là da momenti di reggae di qualità (bellissima è “I And I Survive”) che permettono a noi di tirare il fiato e a loro di rendere omaggio a Jah.
I Bad Brains non si ripeteranno a questi livelli (come biasmarli), ma con questo lavoro lasceranno un segno indelebile nel rock e per quello che sarà il crossover.
Imperdibile per tutti gli amanti del rock estremo.
