Theremin, tracce di colonne sonore di vecchi spy-movies, organo hammond, echi della swingin' London anni '60, ronzii di strumenti analogici che sembrano essere stati inventati ieri... ai Broadcast piace guardarsi indietro e rivestire le proprie composizioni con l'aura polverosa del passato, creando un'atmosfera crepuscolare, estremamente suggestiva e che lascia nell'ascoltatore una sensazione tanto profonda quanto vaga e indefinita.
Sospeso nell'incantesimo del tempo, Work And Non Work è quasi impenetrabile - ma non ostico. Tutti e nove i brani sono ostinati - insistenti come certe piogge autunnali - nel riproporre ritmi ipnotici che talvolta danno le vertigini; aggrappiamoci allora alla voce di Trish Keenan, infantile e cristallina, candida e a rigida come il corpo esile di un'adolescente.
Work And Non Work è un'esperienza straniante e bellissima: è il passato riflesso nel futuro, è analogico riprodotto col digitale, è musica di prima qualità fatta anche con strumenti di seconda mano.
