Ecco a voi uno dei dischi più venduti di tutti i tempi, un vero e proprio classico della musica americana.
Pur essendo un esordio, la cantante newyorkese ha esordito al Queens College incidendo demo dapprima con un giovane Paul Simon e, in seguito, con Gerry Goffrin. Insieme daranno vita a una delle coppie di songwriter più profilici che l'America abbia avuto, seconda solo al duo Leiber & Stoller. Durante gli anni '60 il loro sodalizio diventerà profilico, comporranno canzoni diventati classici intramontabili come "Will You Love Me Tomorrow", "Up On The Roof", "The Locomotion", solo per citarne alcune, canzoni che eseguiranno artisti del calibro di Animals, Blood Sweat & Tears, Bobby Vee, Moonkees, Righteous Brothers. Durante gli anni, lei curando la musica e lui i testi, prenderà forma il loro stile armonico ed elegante che affascinerà persino i Fab Four e sopravviverà all'avvento di nuove forme musicali più vicine al blues e alla successiva psichedelia.
Dopo la rottura del sodalizio artistico e sentimentale con Goffin, la ragazza si ritrova a dover sostenere da sola tra i vari oneri anche una musicalità divenuta matura e ben ossidata, ma l'abitudine ad operare dietro le quinte renderà difficile per l'artista uscire allo scoperto. Sarà l'amico James Taylor a convincerla e, nel 1971, vedrà la luce "Tapestry".
Ma andiamo a scoprire insieme la grandezza di questo disco. Si parte con "I Feel The Earth Move" e che partenza! Un ottimo groove testimonia un buon feeling fra la King e i musicisti, i fidi Danny Kortchmar alla chitarra e Charles Larkey al basso. Il pezzo vola alto soprattutto nelle risposte fra piano e chitarra, mentre il basso di Larkey rimane sempre vivo e pulsante, il canto e la melodia aggiungono un tocco prezioso al risultato. "So Far Away", altro esempio di raffinatezza melodica, contribuiscono al risultato la chitarra di James Taylor e il flauto magico di Curtis Amy. Si prosegue con un altro hit, "It's Too Late", accenni di jazz/blues sulla punta delle dita e un ritornello che si apre come un fiore in primavera. Fra le altre track, da citare "Way Over Yonder" vero e proprio esempio di gospel bianco, stessa enfasi, stessa vibrazioni, la comunità nera apprezzerebbe senz'altro, e ancora "You've Got a Friend", altro classico divenuto a sua volta classico del repertorio di Taylor, la già citata "Will You Love Me Tomorrow" scritta con Goffin dieci anni prima, il ritmo coinvolgente di "Smackwater Jack".
Il disco si chiude con uno dei classici di tutti i tempi reso celebra dalla voce di Aretha Franklin "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman", scritta anch'essa anni prima dal duo Goffin/King, e chissà cosa avrà provato l'autice a reimpossessarsi di questa gran canzone, capace di tirare allo scoperto emozioni nascoste con un giro armonico che rasenta la perfezione.
In definitiva "Tapestry" è un classico intramontabile, capace ancora di affascinare col suo stile raffinato, ma anche con un anima nera che fa da sfondo e che rende questo disco ancora vivo e pulsante.

Tapestry è qualcosa di così raffinato e delizioso da poter far sembrare di toccare il cielo con un dito.
La voce calda e sincera di Carole King, accompagnata da un pianoforte suonato in maniera molto accurata, crearono un nuovo modello per i cantautori negli anni '70.
