Perdere un figlio di pochi mesi è una delle cose più dolorose che possono capitare nella vita (e ne abbiamo una conferma dalla cronaca oggi, ADDIO TOMMY). Perderlo per motivi inspiegabili è ancora peggio. E divorziare subito dopo ti disintegra psicologicamente.
Penso che poche persone abbiano avuto la forza di uscire da questa situazione in modo positivo; tra queste c'è Craig Minowa, di Minneapolis, fondatore di una comunità no-profit di stampo ambientalista e fondatore, chitarrista e cantante dei Cloud Cult. A 2 anni dalle tristi vicende che lo hanno colpito, Craig pubblica questo bellissimo "Advice from the Happy Hippopotamus". L'album è composto da 22 bellissime canzoni, che esplorano l'indie rock in ogni suo aspetto, in cui è sottesa sempre una vena malinconica. Ma l'album è anche un concept sull'infanzia e sulla morte, nei cui testi si arriva a concetti filosofici sulla vita. Difficile descrivere tutte le perle di questo album, perciò citerò le migliori a parere di chi scrive.
L'inizio è straordinario: "Intro" è una delle migliori introduzioni strumentali che abbia sentito: per tutto il brano c'è un'alternanza di violini, computer music e chitarre che formano una base su cui continua la bellissima ballata pop "Living on the Outside of Your Skin". "Happy Hippo" richiama i Chemical Brother, ma presenta una citazione di Neil Young nel ritornello; infatti sentiamo Craig cantare: "Hey, hey, my, my, you best learn to live while you're alive/ Is better to burn out than to fade away, my, my, hey, hey". "What comes at the end" è un'altra ballata pop con una lunga intro di chitarra e batteria, mentre "Transistor Radio" è suonata solo con una chitarra acustica e parla di Craig che trova ciò che gli vuole mostrare il nonno parlandogli attraverso una radio transistor. "Car Wash" è cantata da una donna e ricorda come sonorità PJ Harvey.
Nel finale dell'album si segnalano la cavalcata elettrica "Can't Stop the Journey Now", la simil-country "Lucky Today" e propio alla fine la bellissima "Bobby's Spacesuit". Consigliato a chi vuole passare un'ora con un album che non stanca per la varietà delle sue canzoni.
