Dopo il successo sonico-commerciale del decantato "The Gallery" gli svedesi di provenienza Gothenburg si trovarono di fronte il difficile compito di mantenersi sugli stessi livelli... impresa impossibile secondo la maggioranza degli addetti ai lavori.
A mio avviso, invece, i nostri riuscirono a mantenere il fantastico touch melodico del precedente, unendolo però ad una maggiore dose di brutalità e immediatezza. E questo "Enter Suicidal Angels" servì da taster per il seguente, e roccioso come mai prima "The mind's I".
Nei quattro brani presenti la fomula, infatti, non cambia ma si arricchisce di quella concretezza che in "The Gallery" fu messa leggermente da parte in favore di istrionici tecnicismi assai raffinati (Punish my heaven, The dividing line). Forse manca quella radiosa regalità nei riffs e nelle armonie ma viene favorito l'impatto che si rivela micidiale.
"Zodijackyl light" è un'aggressione licenziata da un riffing quasi slayeriano con il drumming più basilare ed un cantato privilegiante tonalità vicine ad un gutturale assai cupo (comunque sempre shrieky...). Ottimo il rallentamento centrale e ficcanti le melodie dei twin solos.
"Razorfever" è maideniana nell'anima ma graffiante nel suo svilupparsi (At the Gates again..). Stanne, vero gladiatore del microfono, strazia e fa "soffrire" conferendo al pezzo una furia belluina mentre la battaglia chitarre-batteria crea scintille come al solito. Un elegante break acustico ed un assolo vincente la chiudono.
Il ritorno ai suoni dell'album precedente si fa sentire in "Shadowlit facade" aiutato da partiture intricate e la scelta di leads di rara bellezza. Brano che lascia sognare dolcemente ma che colpisce ferale ed abrasivo nelle accelerazioni. "Archetype" è una pazzia sonora di difficile spiegazione e collocazione. Loops folli di stampo house-techno-trance si rincorrono sguaiatamente conditi dalle urla del singer in versione campionata. Davvera strana, resta comunque un episodio curioso che non verrà comunque ripetuto o riproposto così spudoratamente in futuro.
In conclusone un pregevole sette pollici dove i Dark Tranquillity dimostrarono una maggiore dose di potenza ed immediatezza rispetto al passato, pur stagliandosi tra le masse per le scelte di armonie davvero uniche e brillanti.
