Considero la carriera di David Gray una delle poche favole musicali diventate realtà.
Dopo anni di onorata carriera cantautorale, puntualmente snobbata da critica e pubblico, l’artista di Manchester raggiunse con il solo “White Ladder” un successo inaspettato che lo consacrò come il Bob Dylan di fine secolo.
Una manciata di canzoni, per lo più incentrate proprio sul difficile rapporto cantautore indifferenza discografica, ed ecco che il nostro non solo inizia una lunga permanenza ai vertici delle classifiche, ma viene anche indicato come il precursore di quel “new acoustic movement” che da lì a poco avrebbe lanciato band acustiche alla conquista del mondo.
L’attesa del nuovo David Gray era quindi piena di curiosità.
“A New Day At Midnight” centra tutte le aspettative. Conferma il talento indiscutibile dell’artista ma soprattutto mostra come successo e formule vincenti non sempre impediscono una crescita professionale. L’incontro di elementi apparentemente lontani e contrastanti costituisce il filo conduttore di tutto l’album. Canzoni come al solito di grande impatto emotivo ottengono affascinante forma nella sottile unione tra acustica ed elettronica, questa degnamente rappresentata da sampler e drum machine, capaci senza rubare la scena di offrire un intimo tappeto sonoro.
Anche l’atmosfera che emerge è il risultato della fusione di stati d’animo diversi. Toni fortemente malinconici, inevitabilmente derivanti dalla perdita del padre e parentesi più solari ed ottimiste, da ricondurre in questo caso alla nascita del figlio, collaborano a confezionare uno dei migliori lavori del 2002.
Colonna sonora ideale per un tramonto, come sembra suggerire la copertina, ma adatto anche per la successiva alba, “A New Day At Midnight” è un album che diffonde emozioni sotto forma di note e parole.
