Shoegaze-Disco? New Power-Pop? Post-Post-New Wave? Electro-Rock’n’Roll? Sarebbe curioso indire un referendum per trovare la definizione che più si adatta al sound del nuovo album dei Delays, quattro ragazzotti inglesi, dotati di indiscusso talento e piccoli genii della nuova rivoluzione ‘pop’ d’Oltremanica.

“You See Colours”, a partire dalla strepitosa copertina (molto Neworderiana, ma anche vicina a certe produzioni della 23 Envelope artefice degli artwork di casa 4AD), sancisce la consacrazione della band, dopo un acerbo “Faded Seaside Glamour” che ha portato i quattro nel 2004 in tour per un anno, in tutta Europa, assieme ai più fortunati Keane.
Undici brani pop, tutt’altro che convenzionali, costituiscono l’ossatura dell’opera, dove la voce in falsetto di Greg Gilbert (che ricorda molto la timbrica vocale di Scott Miller dei mai dimenticati Game Theory, formazione americana molto popolare nelle ‘College Radio’ di fine anni ottanta), disegna le sue trame su multicolori arpeggi di chitarre e ritmiche elettroniche quasi prossime alla techno-disco degli 80.
L’apertura di “You And Me” potrebbe ingannare. Un sussurro folk quasi alla Nick Drake e poi un attacco ritmico mozzafiato con bellissime chitarre che si inerpicano e si dipanano lungo la struttura melodicissima del brano che cresce sempre più nel finale. Si prosegue con “Valentine”… attacco alla “Pro-gen” degli Shamen e cantato celestiale, quasi che i Cocteau Twins si fossero incontrati a Ibiza con Giorgio Moroder in un’improbabile jam-session… e poi profusione di chitarre shoegazing a volontà con apertura melodica incredibile per una delle canzoni più contagiose di questo 2006.
E poi: “This Town’s Religion”, electro-rock psichedelico, melodia molto Game Theory, con influenze new wave 80; “Sink Like A Stone”, “Hideaway” e “Winter’s Memory Of Summer” celestiali cavalcate shoegazing tra Lush, Pale Saints e perché no?... Stone Roses; “Too Much In Your Life”, rollingstoniana e sospesa tra realtà e suggestioni psichedeliche notturne; “Given Time” bellissima ballata evanescente tra pop e wave con un inciso vicino alle cose più intense dei Lotus Eaters (altra storica formazione di culto emersa nella metà degli 80 che ha riportato il suono delle chitarre nella new wave dell’epoca); “Lillian” dove Iggy Pop sembra essersi ripulito da certe asperità e aver scoperto Nick Drake; “Out Of Nowhere”, psychedelic pop, byrdsiano fino all’osso e vicino ai Primal Scream di “Sonic Flower Groove”; infine “Waste Of Space” delicata e crepuscolare ballata dai toni malinconici un po’ radiohead-iani per un finale più che azzeccato.

Conclusione di dovere è: promozione a pieni voti ai Delays e al loro caleidoscopio globale di suoni.
