"No Angel", uscito nel 1999 (anche se in Italia i primi video sono comparsi nei primi mesi del 2001), è il debutto discografico di Dido Armstrong (sorella del produttore dei Faithless, Rollo Armstrong).
E' la sua prima esperienza solista ma non è nuova del panorama musicale, in quanto iniziò la carriera come corista nei primi due album dei Faithless, collaborando sia nella realizzazione dei loro pezzi che seguendo la band in tour.
Nell'album, composto da dodici tracce, prevale l'elettronica supportata dalla splendida voce della cantante.
Apre il disco il suo primo singolo, "Here With Me" che, oltre l'ottimo successo avuto con la diffusione del relativo video sulle emittenti musicali italiane, è nota anche perchè è la colonna sonora della serie televisiva Roswell. Ottimi bilanciamenti musicali in questo pezzo che personalmente riascolto sempre con piacere.
"Hunter", il bellissimo terzo singolo dell'album, si caratterizza per la sua meravigliosa melodia prodotta dalla chitarra che accompagna la voce della cantante durante tutto il brano.
"Don't Think Of Me" si differenzia dalle precedenti in quanto vi è un'atmosfera più solare ed il ritmo è più sostenuto; è accompagnata alla grande dal basso e dalla chitarra.
"My Lover's Gone" propone un riferimento ai Faithless, in quanto la prima strofa che Dido canta è la stessa della canzone "Postcard" contenuta nell'album "Sunday 8 P.M." del gruppo sopraccitato. E' una canzone lenta dove si nota un cantato malinconico che si sviluppa progressivamente nel finale.
"All You Want" è un pezzo dalle caratteristiche più o meno simili a "Don't Think Of Me".
La sesta traccia è il secondo singolo "Thank You", nota per essere la colonna sonora del film "Sliding Doors" e per essere stata campionata da Eminem qualche mese prima per la sua "Stan", indubbiamente uno dei suoi pezzi più belli e fortunati. Sostenuta magnificamente dal piano e dalle percussioni, è molto piacevole all'ascolto ed alquanto diversa rispetto le precedenti tracce.
Molto differente rispetto alle altre è pure "Honestly O.K.", prevalentemente elettronica, introdotta dalle tastiere e dalla batteria; al cantato tranquillo di Dido si alternano nei ritornelli dei magnifici cori che risaltano il pezzo.
Seguono "Slide", caratterizzata da un bel testo e da un ritmo più scorrevole rispetto alle precedenti, ed "Isobel", un'altra canzone indubbiamente piacevole interpretata con la sua voce dolce e malinconica.
La decima "I'm No Angel", anch'essa sviluppata su un accompagnamento prodotto dalle percussioni e non molto diversa dalle altre song, è il filo conduttore per la undicesima traccia, a mio parere il vero capolavoro del disco, "My Life".
Quest'ultima è una ballata lenta e malinconica, accompagnata in modo fantastico dal ritmo ben scandito della batteria e dalle meravigliose note del piano. Ha un testo bellissimo, ed è alquanto coinvolgente.
L'opera si chiude con "Take My Hand", un altro buon pezzo sviluppato su un andamento scorrevole e dal testo bellissimo.
Sostanzialmente un buonissimo album d'esordio, che personalmente ho apprezzato molto di più rispetto al successivo "Life For Rent" che, anche se è un buon disco, ritengo abbia deluso un pò le aspettative.
