Il miglior disco degli Edguy e su questo non si discute.
Nonostante la loro tenera età, sembra proprio che questi cinque ragazzi abbiano tanti anni di esperienza dimostrando di essere dei veri maestri con questo loro “VAIN GLORY OPERA”! Ovviamente sono figli di Germania e come la tradizione vuole, scelgono di fare “Power” che è un genere bellissimo caratterizzato da suoni veloci, epici, potenti… su cui vengono cantati testi riguardanti situazioni fantastiche e surreali; inoltre è anche il genere più pulito (naturalmente dopo il “White”) e quindi in media, lontano da tutta quella merda occulta del cazzo!
Chi sono i costituenti di questa band? Possiamo dirlo così: Tobias Sammet (voce) + Dirk Sauer (chitarra) + Jens Ludwig (chitarra) + Tobias Exxel (basso) + Felix Bohnke (batteria) = EDGUY. Da notare che questa operazione potrebbe quasi godere della proprietà commutativa perché i membri (in particolare Sammet) sanno suonare più strumenti ma forse questa è la formazione ideale da cui si tira fuori il massimo. Cambiando quindi l’ordine degli addendi il risultato cambia solo un po’. Per aumentare il fascino del disco, troviamo come ospiti (d'onore) Hansi Kursch dei Blind Guardian e Timo Tolkki degli Stratovarius che gli fanno un pò da papà e da zio.
Come per molti dischi power, si inizia con una breve intro : "Overture", buon biglietto da visita che ci fa subito capire con cosa abbiamo a che fare, catapultandoci nel paese delle meraviglie. "Until We Rise Again", sulla base di un power al 100%, parla di un mondo futuristico regnato da robot contro i quali gli uomini devono riscattarsi per avere la meglio su di loro. "How Many Miles" se non vi piace, vi chiederò: "Quante Miglia" siete lontani dallo stereo??!!. Brividi lungo la schiena all'ascolto della quarta traccia: "Scarlet Rose" Mamma mia!!! Che canzone!!! (Se siete in estate e indossate un cappotto, il pelo vi si alzerà lo stesso!). Questa ballata inizia con un dolce suono acustico molto ben cantato che precede un riff spettacolare da “standing ovation”che non permette di restar seduti. "Out Of Control" mi fa perdere il controllo (sarà la canzone?) in cui regnano le DUE DIVERSE MERAVIGLIE sonore provocate dalle contrazioni dei muscoli vocali di Tobias e Hansi in cui il primo restringe di più la rima della glottide causando la fuoriuscita di una voce più sottile, il secondo la restringe di meno cantando con una voce più grossa ma che compensa con la potenza che per me è da terremoto (occhio quindi agli oggettini vicino alla cassa se non hanno una posizione molto stabile).
Virtuosismi chitarristici, preceduti da un inizio tipo “The Final Countdown”, in risalto nella title track per OPERA del titanico Tolkki insieme di nuovo alla voce di Kursch. La settima è "Fairytale" che con un elegante assolo di chitarra si fa promuovere come la successiva "Walk On Fighting". La nona corrisponde alla seconda ballad del disco che è "Tomorrow" (pezzo azzeccato e indispensabile). Infine si conclude con un pezzo molto duro e decisamente diverso dagli altri brani che risponde al nome di "No More Foolin". Miglior disco dell’anno 1998 insieme a “Nightfall In Middle Earth” dei Blind Guardian e “Fireworks” degli Angra (una trilogia power datata 98 che consiglio a tutti).
