Jump up, Sleeping with the past, Duets, Aida, The Union. Sono questi i 5 titoli che mancano sul Debasio dei 33 dischi in studio di Elton John. E così, dopo aver completato l'Opera Omnia dei Pooh, mi appresto a tappare anche i buchi della discografia di Reginald da Pinner. Cominciamo da questo Jump up! dell'anno 1982, prodotto da Chris Thomas e registrato agli Air Studios di Montserrat, ma anche ai Pathe Marconi Studios di Parigi. La formazione che accompagna Elton era costituita da Jeff Porcaro alla batteria, il compianto Dee Murray al basso, James Newton Howard alle tastiere e Richie Zito alle chitarre. Nella canzone Ball and chain alla chitarra c'è la guest star Pete Townshend, che onora il legame con Elton stabilitosi nel 1975 col musical Tommy. Dieci canzoni per un album di buon livello, ma secondo critica e pubblico il prodotto è al di sotto sia di 21 at 33 che di The Fox. In parole povere, gli anni d'oro di Elton qui sono già distanti, scusate il gioco di parole, anni luce. Tra i brani rimasti nella memoria collettiva sicuramente Blue Eyes, curiosamente scritta non da fido Bernie Taupin ma da Gary Osborne. Una canzone semplice ma efficace, insieme a Little Jeannie tra i grandi successi della strana coppia formata da Elton e Gary. L'altro brano che ha resistito all'usura del tempo è la commovente Empty Garden (Hey Hey Johnny), dedicata a John Lennon a due anni dalla scomparsa. Tra le altre si segnalano Legal Boys, prima canzone dove Elton si avvale della collaborazione di Tim Rice, che poi scriverà sia la colonna sonora del Re Leone che quella di Aida. I singoli estratti furono ben cinque: oltre a Blue eyes ed Empty Garden, furono proposti Ball and chain, Princess e All quiet on the western front. Il risultato finale è un 3 stelle al rialzo. Prodotto non tra i migliori di Elton, ma che comunque sarà un buon segno, in quanto col successivo Too Low For Zero Elton non solo ritornerà al successo commerciale stabile, ma anche alla stabile partnership con Bernie.
