Embrace, ovvero "abbraccio".
E la musica della band capitanata dai fratelli McNamara suona proprio così, come un caldo ed avvolgente abbraccio che trasporta in un mondo fatto di melodie a volte delicate, sognanti e malinconiche, altre volte vigorose, trascinanti ed epiche.
In ogni album della band è evidente questo alternarsi di emozioni, ed è così anche in questo "This New Day", ultimo lavoro in ordine di tempo del gruppo britannico, arrivato a solo un anno e mezzo di distanza dal successone del precedente "Out Of Nothing" e soprattutto del singolo "Gravity", ballad-perla scritta da "sua onnipresenza" Chris Martin.
Britpop, rock, qualche elemento gospel, malinconia quanto basta e ritornelli da urlare al cielo si alternano in un vortice travolgente di squarci melodici coinvolgenti e mai troppo scontati, anche se il gusto per il refrain vincente a tutti i costi svilisce leggermente l'ottimo quadro generale. E' proprio quando quest'ultimo "vizio" viene meno che si sentono le cose più interessanti, a maggior ragione in questo "This New Day", dove gli Embrace osano un po' di più rispetto alle ultime prove da studio. "Exploding Machines", ad esempio, non parte benissimo col suo ricalcare meticolosamente il sound proposto dal penultimo Coldplay ("X & Y"), ma poi sviluppa una trama affatto banale in cui la solita attenzione dei McNamara per la melodia iperglicemica insistita viene fortunatamente meno. Stesso dicasi per "Target", in cui vengono incorporati stranissimi (per il genere di riferimento) inserti guitar/dance, oppure "Even Smaller Stones", forse la cosa più interessante sfornata dagli Embrace negli ultimi otto anni. Qua il sound si fa più ostico e sofisticato, senza esagerare o scuotere più di tanto, ma sorprendendo un bel po'.
Bene anche quando l'ormai collaudata anima malinconica dei cinque viene senza vergogna a galla: "I Can't Come Down", cuore del disco posto a metà tracklist, è una ballad per la quale almeno il settanta per cento delle band di pop rock melodico darebbe entrambi gli arti superiori. "Nature's Law" funziona come singolo (è il pezzo di maggior successo in patria nella carriera del gruppo, sinora), ma in fin dei conti sa troppo di ruffiano (anche se il ritornello da stadio stuzzica che è un piacere), mentre "Celebrate" sfoga nel ritornello tutta l'ammirazione repressa della band britannica verso il Bono più enfatico e pomposo.
Da segnalare, infine, la riedizione del disco con l'inserimento alla traccia numero quattro del secondo singolo "World At Your Feet", allegra (?) canzoncina scelta dalla Federazione calcistica britannica come colonna sonora ufficiale della nazionale Inglese ai Mondiali tedeschi del 2006.
