Molti conoscono i Free solo per la loro hit mondiale “All Right Now”, ed è un vero peccato. Nei sette album che hanno prodotto, ci sono un sacco di canzoni sensazionali, che hanno ispirato le generazioni di allora e di adesso.
Heartbreaker è l’ultimo album, datato 1973. La formazione non è classica, ma valida lo stesso: oltre a Paul Rodgers come vocalist e Simon Kirke alla batteria, troviamo al basso il giapponese Tetsu Yamauchi, che sostituì il carismatico Andy Fraser. Per la prima volta i Free acquisirono anche un tastierista, il texano John “Rabbit” Bundrick. La chitarra è invece alternata tra Snuffy Walden e il consueto Paul Kossoff, il quale stava passando un brutto periodo a causa del suo continuo uso di droghe. La situazione all’interno della band non era delle migliori, la quale si rispecchiò nel disco, che è per certi aspetti molto malinconico.
Il disco apre con “Wishing Well”, che ebbe un discreto successo, e le cui parole fecero pensare ad una ammonizione da parte di Rodgers per il suo amico Kossoff.

Ma Rodgers l’ha sempre smentito. Il pezzo è veramente bello e potente, suonato con carica da parte di tutti i musicisti. “Come Together In The Morning” è il secondo pezzo, e uno dei migliori di tutta la loro carriera; è un brano molto triste, ma molto intenso, soprattutto l’assolo di chitarra di Paul Kossoff. Il suo stile è inconfondibile: poche note trasportate a lungo nell’assolo, quasi a farlo sembrare un lamento. Segue “Travellin’ In Style”, che potrebbe sembrare il punto debole del disco, ma che in realtà serve a staccare tra una canzone e l’altra, dato che è l’unica ad avere una melodia completamente allegra. “Heartbreaker” invece è un altro pezzo potente, caratterizzato dalla musica tetra e dalle parole apparentemente tristi, che parlano di un uomo cosciente del suo fallimento nella vita, ma che vuole ricominciare daccapo. L’influenza dello stile di Bundrick è notabile in “Muddy Water”, una canzone veramente notevole, soprattutto per i fantastici giri di basso, e “Common Mortal Man”, la quale sembra un’altra dedica a Kossoff, dato che parla delle visioni dei tossicodipendenti. Dopo una mediocre “Easy On My Soul”, il disco chiude con “Seven Angels”, l’ultima canzone dei Free in assoluto. L’atmosfera qui è magica e surreale, che fa volare l’immaginazione a chissà dove.
Appena finita la tournée (la quale non includeva Kossoff) i Free si sciolsero. Tetsu Yamauchi entrò nei Faces, Paul Kossoff e John Bundrick formarono i Back Street Crawler. Simon Kirke e Paul Rodgers invece formarono i Bad Company. Rodgers ricevette anche l’offerta da parte di Ritchie Blackmore di entrare a far parte dei Deep Purple. Rodgers rifiutò, e Ian Gillan venne sostituito dal talentato David Coverdale, che non diede rimpianti. Ma questa è un’altra storia....
