"Oh, this is the start of something good..." - sono queste le prime parole di "Follow thorugh", prima traccia del disco di debutto del giovane cantautore americano Gavin DeGraw.
Ed in effetti, sembrerebbe "Chariot", questo il titolo dell'album, un inizio davvero eccellente per la carriera di questo artista che, neofita, lo è solo per le discografie ufficiali, ma di fatto, vanta alle spalle una lunga carriera spesa nei pianobar NewYorkesi, supportata da importanti studi svolti presso la prestigiosa "Berklee School of Music".
Sound tipico da pop-rock americano, con occhiolino comunque ammiccante a qualche sfumatura acustica un po' brit, e liriche poetiche e contemporanee, fanno di "Chariot" un disco davvero completo.
La semplicità mai banale delle melodie invece, cattura facilmente l'orecchio, non stancando dopo diversi ascolti ed anzi, lasciando che l'ascoltatore stesso possa scoprire gradualmente i vari brani, molto diversi tra loro, ma perfettamente incastrati in un disco compatto, che non sembra davvero presentare falle e punti deboli, pur non avendo pretese esasperate. Oltre alla già citata ballata "Follow through", uno dei pezzi più belli dell'intera stagione musicale, ci sono diversi brani, capaci di restare sospesi tra la malinconia e la forza, tra il soft di un piano delicato ed il graffio di una chitarra sempre molto giovane e comunque ben studiata. In quest'ottica, salta all'occhio, (anzi all'orecchio), "Belief", forse la perla principale del disco, pezzo da atmosfere molto romantiche, affrontate però con una grinta ascendente, per l'appunto caratteristica del pop-rock targato usa. Manifesto eccellente del genere di cui è porta-bandiera DeGraw può chiaramente essere considerata "I don't want to be", canzone forte e coincisa, sia nei toni che nel testo, tra l'altro premiatissima, anche grazie ad un felice abbinamento con una serie televisiva di successo negli states.
Impossibile non citare anche la bellissima title-track "Chariot", autentico tormentone mondiale, dove Gavin sfodera le sue indubbie qualità vocali, a supporto di un ritornello strappa neuroni ed un piano incalzante a condire il tutto. Ed a proposito delle qualità vocali dell'artista, va sicuramente segnalata "More than anyone", voce fuori coro di un disco abbastanza ritmato, ma senz'altro brano capace di estendere e di fatto esaltare, proprio le doti vocali di DeGraw. Varrebbe la pena di segnalare davvero ogni brano, magari per motivi differenti: "Crush" per un incipit di assoluta forza per esempio, oppure "Meaning" per un loop basso-chitarra che di suo è già struttura melodica.
A livello lirico, come detto, una vena poetica semplice e non inisistita, affronta tematiche sempre attuali. Temi dominanti apparentemente frivoli, come amore ed amicizia, vengono sviscerati, a volte in chiave diretta, a volte in chiave metaforica, ma sempre con grande garbo e soprattutto con la positività di un sole ("Chariot" vuol dire letteralmente carro, ma è evidente il riferimento al sole!), che accompagna di luce soffusa questo incantevole disco.
