Questo "If Only You Were Lonely" è l'ultimo lavoro degli Hawthorne Heights, dopo l'album da pacchi-e-pacchi di copie vendute "The Silence In Black And White". "The Silence In Black And White" era il massimo della ruffianeria. Un album emo/rock/pop mediocre che ha costruito la sua fortuna (e i pacchi di copie vendute) semplicemente perchè uscito nel momento in cui il genere musicale "emo" era più in voga. Di degno di nota in quel disco c'era solo una canzone ("Ohio Is For Lovers") su undici. Lecito quindi aspettarsi da una band così furbetta un "The Silence In Black And White Pt. 2", mascherato sotto il nome di "If Only You Were Lonely". In realtà gli Hawthorne Heights hanno preso un po' di coraggio e hanno segnato una piccola svolta rispetto al disco d'esordio.
In generale, "If Only You Were Lonely" è molto più vicino ad un album Pop/Punk/Rock che al "Nu-Emo" del predecessore. Ma cosa avrò voluto dire? Che innanzitutto è presente molto meno "scream" (se così si può chiamare) che in precedenza. Secondo poi, non sono più presenti gli arpeggi ultra-melodici che caratterizzavano le canzoni di "The Silence", insomma le melodie sono più "celate". A parte questi cambiamenti, permangono pregi e difetti che contraddistinguono questa band. La capacità di dare alla luce melodie dannatamente "catchy", di quelle che non riesci a non canticchiare, da parte dei tre chitarristi è rimasta invariata per esempio. Però gli Hawthorne Heights hanno un terribile difetto. Quello di non variare mai quello che fanno. E così a parte tre/quattro canzoni (il singolo "Saying Sorry", la opener "This Is Who We Are", "We Are So Last Year" e la ballata "Decembers" caratterizzata dal pianoforte), che grazie al loro ascolto immediato entrano subito in testa, il resto dell'album è fin troppo omogeneo, complice anche la fastidiosa tendenza degli Hawthorne Heights di scrivere tutte canzoni mid-tempo.
In definitiva, sicuramente un disco più onesto di "The Silence" (sorvolando sulle due edizioni "da collezionare". . . alla Victory le inventano tutte per fare soldi!), con la sua forza nelle melodie immediate, che però soffre pesantemente di un'eccessiva ripetività e dell'assenza di episodi particolarmente memorabili (sebbene abbia i suoi due o tre bei singoli).
