Quel genio di Matt Pike ha colpito ancora.Il terzo album della sua nuova band, gli High on Fire appunto,sotterra tutti e tutto... Cavernoso, scuro, implacabile...
Se n'è andato lo storico bassista George Rice ed è arrivato Joe Preston (i Melvins vi dicono qualcosa??) ma soprattutto c'è stata la rottura col suo produttore di sempre Billy Andersen sostituito niente di meno che da Steve Albini... Il riffing compulsivo e potentissimo di Matt si incastra con la batteria tritatutto dello strepitoso Des Kensel in modo davvero incredibile creando muri di suono "sporco" che si tramutano ogni tanto (solo ogni tanto però!) in svisate che un po' fanno ricordare il vecchio e splendido gruppo di matt: gli Sleep!
Nove tracce, 53 minuti e spiccioli che dimostrano come la band di Oakland sia riuscita nell'impresa di fare un album che è talmente scarno, grezzo, annichilente, monolitico che dopo qualche ascolto piace proprio per questo. Thrash, sludge, stoner tutto frullato in modo originale e rabbioso, ma anche se così si può dire celato gelosamente dietro al suono monumentale proprio di questa grande band; non voglio nominare una canzone rispetto ad un'altra, basta l'apertura del disco a spiegare tutto:batteria tribale e poi... beh ascoltatelo!!!Sembra davvero che quest'album ad un primo ascolto ti respinga da tanto che è denso scuro e ostico ma dopo è qualcosa di fantastico... Un viaggio mentale creato da uno che di viaggi mentali in musica(e non solo!!)se ne intende:Jerusalem degli Sleep... qualcuno se li ricorda vero?? Tutto deflagra con il finale devastante del disco: "To cross the bridge" e "Silver Back" due gioielli che spingono al limite il disco che invece si chiude con "Sons of Thunder" cavalcata psichedelica che traghetta l'ascoltatore fuori da questo incubo(in sensoi buono s'intende!!) in musica. Scordatevi i loro precedenti album "The Art Of Self-Defense" e "Surrounded By Thieves" comunque validissimi e tuffatevi in quello che secondo il mio modestissimo parere è un capolavoro punto e basta.
P.s:dal vivo sono a dir poco terremotanti!! Non lasciateveli scappare il 22 aprile al bloom... Aspetto con ansia consensi smentite e vaffa!
