Il giochino lo abbiamo già fatto coi Dark Tranquillity e, dato che a qualcuno è piaciuto, lo ripropongo.
Prendiamo i Children Of Bodom e prendiamo questi Kalmah (che nome orribile). Entrambi finlandesi, entrambi in cinque ed entrambi con la stessa formazione. Inoltre entrambi muniti del solito chitarrista egocentricamente (che molto probabilmente non esiste) sborone.
Tra l'altro entrambi i gruppi usano chitarre Jackson e questo, sebbene possa non fregarvene di meno, a me interessa molto.
A questo punto, date le premesse, ci dovremmo trovare di fronte a due gruppi speculari.
Così non è... e per un motivo prettamente tecnico. Nei Kalmah i riff solisti sono parte integrante delle canzoni e soprattutto, sono sempre presenti. Ma proprio sempre! Sembra che i Kalmah abbiano scritto i loro pezzi e sopra ogni (TUTTI) riff siano stati arrangiati dei piccoli assoli: il che riconduce a un modo di comporre e suonare tipicamente ultra tecnico-masturbatorio.
E non è un male perché qui la base per le sfuriate più black e i momenti più calmi e riflessivi dalle tipiche influenze classiche è puro thrash metal, al contrario del power presente nei COB.
Tutto ciò fa somigliare questo cd a una bella catenata nelle palle, anche grazie a una produzione davvero ottima, non troppo ruvida ma neanche troppo soft. Inoltre, se Alexi Lahio (leader dei COB) propone assoli dal gusto decisamente neoclassico, qui le cose sono molto più veloci e aggressive, tralasciando inutili fronzoli e più riconducibili al thrash.
Le melodie ideate da questi cinque finlandesi, già da questo promettente debut album (ne seguiranno altri due), hanno la caratteristica di entrare con Kalmah (ehm) nella vostra testolina e lasciarvi davvero soddisfatti del vostro acquisto (per la cronaca io non l'ho comprato).
