Partendo dal racconto dell’amore per il suo adorato rat terrier, Lolabelle, morto nel 2011, Laurie Anderson, gradualmente e con delicatezza finisce per parlarci di lei, della sua – siamo convinti – speciale personalità, artistica e umana, delle esperienze anche drammatiche della sua infanzia, dei difficili rapporti con la madre.
Meditando sulla perdita, sulla morte, sull’amore e il linguaggio, cercando di mutuare dai concetti buddisti e citando, pur con estrema sobrietà e distacco, il Libro Tibetano dei Morti (un testo che descrive le esperienze che l’anima cosciente vive dopo la morte), Ludwig Wittgenstein, David Foster Wallace (“Ogni storia d’amore è una storia di fantasmi”)…
Il tutto è costruito, con molta intensità emotiva, da immagini amatoriali in 8 millimetri, a cui si incastonano disegni della stessa autrice, i suoi commenti (per sua espressa volontà, anche in italiano); e una musica minimale toccante, con brani per violino solista, quartetti, canzoni ed elettronica ambient.
Il film era stato presentato e accolto con un certo favore alla 72° mostra del Cinema di Venezia nel 2015.
La singolare figura dell’artista e della donna Laurie Anderson, con una grande carriera alle spalle, ancora una volta sorprende e stupisce.
In modo attuale e moderno, quasi classico ovvero senza tempo.
La chicca che accompagna i titoli di coda è il brano del marito Lou Reed – a cui l’opera è dedicata -, Turning Time Around, fortemente voluta dalla Anderson: “Ho pensato che potesse essere una cosa meravigliosa per Lou poter descrivere la sua definizione d’amore, che abbraccia l’immagine del tempo che gira e si muove in ogni direzione…”
