Difference Engine released its debut Breadmaker in 1994 to a world being weaned off My Bloody Valentine and so-called shoegaze rock.

It was, given the sonic spectrum of that era, which ranged from the muscular guitar army of Swervedriver to the more ambient gauze of soundscapers like Slowdive. Corcoran placed Difference Engine’s processed pop explorations somewhere between both bands.

To retain Breadmaker‘s epochal sound, original Difference Engine member Aubrey Anderson remastered it using an Alan Smart compressor. The technique paid off, according to Corcoran (Guitarrist and Vocalist).

After dropping Breadmaker 15 years ago, the band fractured over label drama, changing musical tastes (thanks for nothing, grunge) and a music industry about to drive off the internet cliff.

The band hasn’t played together since 1995, although its individual members are still musically active. Ayre now performs as progressive medieval folkie Fern Knight, Anderson is with Skating Club and drummer Josiah Webb fronts Magic Shoppe. Corcoran is home-recording with his family.

But Difference Engine‘s sound is bigger than ever thanks to the resurgence of standouts like My Bloody Valentine and Swervedriver, as well as new-gazers like Film School and A Place to Bury Strangers. Shoegaze disappeared from the Earth too fast, given its dynamic sonic range and synesthetic gifts. It was only a matter of time before latecomers discovered the music’s vibrant range, and early adopters were rewarded for their loyalty.
