La prima impressione è con molta probabilità quella giusta.
"Earth Moving" è un disco scarsamente ispirato figlio di un successo che ha travolto Oldfield negli anni '80 e che ha condizionato in modo decisivo molte scelte artistiche del polistrumentista britannico e soprattutto della sua casa discografica, la Virgin di Richard Branson. Nel 1987 Mike aveva dato alle stampe "Islands", lavoro che conteneva tutti gli elementi che avvisavano una possibile crisi creativa con canzoni scialbe da radio FM e poco altro.
Il disco nella sua omogeneità, verso il basso, si salvava in parte grazie alla suite "The Wind Chimes", lontana comunque dalla miglior vena compositiva di Oldfield. Nel 1989 è il turno di "Earth Moving" e per la priva volta Mike realizza un disco di sole canzoni. Se l'idea iniziale era quella di realizzare un disco che vendesse molto le previsioni non furono delle più felici, il disco non vendette in modo soddisfacente e suoi singoli passarono sostanzialmente inosservati. Infatti il pubblicò che seguì fin dagli inizi di carriera Oldfield non può non considerare questo Lp come una banale e irritante sequenza di canzoni senza anima se non irritanti e insulse come la pessima "Innocent" cantata dalla compagna Anita Hegerland.
Per avere un'idea della consistenza del materiale presente in "Earth Moving" basta prendere come riferimento tutta la produzione di Oldfield post 1982, frullarla, e lasciare che sedimenti in modo inconsistente e prevedibile. Composizioni stanche, noiose dalle sonorità plasticose affidate in gran parte a cantanti diversi il che rende ancora più pesante l'ascolto. Non vale la pena sviscerare le canzoni perchè non ve ne è una degna di nota, il disco non è neanche consigliabile ai completisti già probabilmente scottati da "Islands", dopo il 1989 Mike in parte si riprenderà, in parte.
