La penultima fatica discografica dei No Use For A Name (l'anno scorso è uscito il nuovo album "The Feel Good Record Of The Year") conferma la svolta in chiave melodica degli ultimi album del combo di Sunnydale. "Keep Them Confused" infatti è il classico album di Hardcore melodico senza particolari spunti, se non quello di rilassare e finire troppo spesso sul pop.
Lo stile forse ricorda gli ultimi Lagwagon, e a tratti quello dei NOFX.
Di punk o di hc che dir si voglia qui c'è ne poco: qualcosa in "Bullets" (niente di eccezionale tuttavia..) caratterizzato da un intro graffiante di chitarre e da cori finali e in "Check for a pulse" pezzo veloce in cui emerge un ottimo assolo, miglior episodio e colonna portate del lp.
Da segnalare pure il singolo di lancio "For fiona", dove vengono alternati linee vocali sussurrate a cantato normale, ha una melodia azzeccata che nell'interpretazione vocale può ricordare qualche gruppo emo. Orecchiabile, ma dannatamente da sing-along.
I momenti pop-rock però escono alla distanza, come l'emblematica dolce ballata acustica "Divine let you down". Tuttavia tra i brani infarciti di glassa si distingue in particolare la lenta "Black box" che per lo meno ha un ritornello coinvolgente e un assolo ben riuscito. E tutto sommato anche "It's tragic" e "Slowly fading fast" fanno una discreta figura.
A tutto questo aggiungiamoci che la doppietta iniziale lascia subito l'amaro in bocca con due pezzi di medio-core melenso e che la buonanotte e l'arrivederci ci viene dato da una non trascendentale ballad "Overdue" che lascia insoddisfatti.
Risulta difficile classificare il cd in una determinata categoria chiusa. La base ritmica è si in prevalenza hardcore melodico, ma il cantato e buona parte delle canzoni sono pop-rock e aggiungo che le chitarre sono poco sfruttate a dovere. L'unico aspetto che risalta in questo disco è sicuramente il bel timbro vocale di Tony Sly, una delle più belle voci del genere. Ancor più messa in risalto date le caratteristiche del l'opera.
L' ultima nota riguarda l'uso degli archi e dei violini che si inseriscono nei pezzi dando un ulteriore aggiunta al sound generale.
In conclusione la cifra di questo album è l'assenza forse di grandi episodi da "pogo", che invece è pieno di linee vocali fin troppo sottili che non invogliano ad arrivare ad ascoltarlo tutto. Però a favore della band va detto che seppur alleggerendo il sound, come il combo non si sia mai venduto ad una major andando per la propria strada, quindi questo ennesimo capitolo di Tony Sly e soci potrebbe essere visto come una normale evoluzione.
