Eccoci di fronte al debut album di questa band olandese, che col passare del tempo è entrata a far parte dell'olimpo dei gruppi death. Avete mai sentito parlare della sacra triade: Atheist-Cynic-Pestilence? Comunque sia, nel 1988 hanno registrato questo disco di thrash metal semplice e diretto, senza pretese e con voglia di fare un po' di casino. Facile da digerire, Malleus maleficarum è un tipico album da headbanger: ritmi veloci, riff granitici e cantante che sputa le tonsille. All'epoca Patrick Mameli e compagnia non avevano una gran tecnica: le canzoni sono piuttosto lineari, gli assoli ispriati al rumorismo chitarristico di Hanneman e King. Ma d'altronde questo era il loro primo grande passo nel mondo della musica, una specie di prova. In parte erano ancora una band di giovanotti che volevano divertirsi imitando i loro idoli. Insomma, questo album è consigliato se siete fan sfegatati dei Pestilence e ne volete conoscere le origini, oppure se vi piace il genere "thrash da macelleria" che andava in voga in quegli anni. Oppure ancora, se siete malati come me, per il suo discreto valore collezionistico (tanti che ascoltano i Pestilence non sanno nemmeno che questo disco esiste)!
L'album (del 1988) è praticamente introvabile. Dieci anni dopo è però uscita un'interessante ristampa della Displeased records, contenente i due demo della band: "Dysentery" datato 1987 e "The penance", dell'anno seguente, per un totale di 18 canzoni. Malleus maleficarum si prende un'onesta sufficienza. Non è certo un capolavoro, ma è un debut album di tutto rispetto, frutto di quattro ragazzi che avevano buone idee in testa e si sono messi in gioco per potercele mostrare.
