Peter Cincotti è cresciuto a Manhattan: l'isola newyorkese del regista Woody Allen. Ricordate il film omonimo? Quel bianco e nero elegante e Gerswhin a dominare la colonna sonora.
Adesso immaginatevi quei classici locali che vedete solo nei film: tavolini, luci soffuse e un cameriere a cui chiedere "il solito". Cincotti è lì, sul palco a pochi centimetri da terra. Con lui il suo piano e i componenti della sua band: Peter Finck al contrabasso, Kenny Washington alla batteria e Scott Kreitzer al sax.
Magari, prima di accennare il suo prossimo pezzo, si soffermerà su qualche aneddoto della sua vita. Racconterà del suo primo approccio con la musica: a tre anni col piano giocattolo regalatogli dalla nonna. Quanti, quanti anni son passati. Quanti? Beh. Considerando il fatto che attualmente è studente del secondo anno dell'università della Columbia, direi che gli anni passati saranno relativamente pochi.
Ok, smetto di giocare con me stesso e con la vostra pazienza. L'artista in questione ha la bellezza di 19 anni, e nel suo cd d'esordio, pubblicato per la Concord Records di NY, dimostra che ogni tanto le eccezioni esistono. Chi può dar torto a Phil Ramone, produttore e scopritore di questo giovane talentuoso pianista?
Lo studente Cincotti è già musicalmente (e sorprendentemente) maturo: alternando sue composizioni come "I Changed The Rules", "Are You The One?", "Lovers, Secrets, Lies" (i cui testi, tra l'atro, provengono dalle mani della madre) a "classici" del jazz, sembra voler esternare la sua nitida passione per la musica e per il suo strumento.
Passeggia con calma e sicurezza tra repertori di artisti come Billie Holiday o Nat King Cole. Frequenta pezzi come "Fool on the Hill" dei Beatles, rivisitandoli in chiave jazz. Non sembra imporsi limiti, e dimostra di aver davvero gusto.
Tra tutti, merita particolare attenzione il brano "Sway", unica scelta della casa discografica sulla scaletta del cd. Nessuna forzatura: la proposta del brano di Dean Martin (artista Concord, non a caso) è stata accolta con entusiasmo da Cincotti, che ha subito lavorato sullo spartito evitando di ascoltare vecchie versioni del pezzo ("This song was new to me [..] I wanted to try to keep it as fresh as possibile").
Il suo è proprio un jazz fresco, a tratti swingato. Un vero piacere per le orecchie. Nel cantare sembra rifarsi all'intramontabile Sinatra, anche se la sua "onestà musicale" sembra quasi eclissare questo facile e banale accostamento. Davvero bravo.
