Dopo notevoli vicissitudini, peripezie e il rinnovamento della line-up, i Rage fanno ritorno con un album degno della massima attenzione; diversamente non potrebbe essere, perchè i dischi dei Rage sono sempre "importanti"!
Stiamo parlando, senza esagerazione, di una delle migliori heavy metal band degli ultimi 10 anni, dallo spessore artistico e umano sconosciuto al 99 per cento dei loro colleghi. Tornati da qualche tempo alla formula del trio, con l'innesto del chitarrista russo Victor Smolski e del valente drummer Mike Terrana, i Rage si lanciano in un'opera ambigua e intrigante, a tratti schizofrenica per la varietà di approcci presenti, spigolosa e notturna, a forti tinte gotiche ma con inaspettati sprazzi di solarità che appaiono leggermente forzati. La grande capacità di Peavey Wagner di puntellare la tensione emotiva in crescendo dei propri brani è rimasta immutata, incanalata ora in un metal rock possente e drammatico, arricchito dal bagaglio seventies di Smolski e da fumose atmosfere oscure.
Le iniziali Trauma/Paint the devil on the wall mostrano il solito piglio rabbioso, ma non bisogna sorprendersi nell'imbattersi nell'onirico blues di Deep in the night (che cita un po' i primi Whitesnake) o in una Straight to hell dal riff distrorto e saltellante come una versione heavy degli Aerosmith. Non c'è traccia di "commercializzazione" perchè i brani sono lunghi e le strutture complesse e darkeggianti e perchè i Rage sono una band al di sopra delle normali logiche di business. Non sono in molti a poter scrivere una lunga suite come Tribute to dishonour senza indurre l'ascoltatore a togliere di mezzo il disco, ma anzi tenendolo inchiodato alla musica, sino a farlo giungere alle rive buie della ballad After the end, compostamente malincolica.
Un album per chi dice che il power non regali emozioni...
