Chi è RJd2? Un genio che la rivista Spin ha addirittura presentato come il Glenn Gould del sampling… affermazione impegnativa, ma è una lode che secondo me merita. Produttore e remixer freelance, RJ ha già messo in passato il suo prezioso tocco in produzioni di Mos Def, Massive Attack, El-P, Elbow, Cannibal Ox… la lista è lunga e la storia è molto più articolata, chiudo la stringata bio menzionando che Since we last spoke è il suo secondo album solista (qui trovate la discografia completa). Penso che i nomi citati possano bastare per capire in che parrocchia esercita RJ.
È un disco Definitive Jux, ma potrebbe trovare il suo posto anche nei cataloghi Ninja Tune, Lex o Novamute. Un disco estremamente complesso e ricercato ma che sa però acchiappare anche orecchie non allenate. Troviamo la pura attitudine dell’hip hop looping, ma non c’è nessun rap, alcuni brani sono cantati dallo stesso RJ, altri da ospiti, altri naturalmente dai samples. Troviamo semplici melodie intimiste vocali, groove funky beat, atmosfere notturne e solari assieme, saxofoni, flauti a traverso, pianoforti, batterie, chitarre, synth analogici, troviamo sperimentazioni electro e cambiamenti di stili nello stesso brano apparentemente inconciliabili. Troviamo una maestria nel cesellare ed incastrare i loop pulita, class, inarrivabile e soprattutto o sopra il tutto, il suono del vinile campionato in quasi tutto l’album. Dulcis in fundo nella ghost track c’è anche spazio per un ardito orchestrato campionamento di canto lirico. Hip hop meets funk, classic, electro, rock, jazz, latin, prog, avangarde, soul… in a definitive mix!
Vi parlerò di un solo brano, quello che mi è rimasto in testa e mi obbliga spesso ad inserire Since we last spoke. nel mangia dischi, è Ring Finger, scovatelo, ascoltatelo, è semplicemente geniale, passa dal groovefunk beat ad un poetico assolo di chitarra classica per trasformarsi in trip hop con una calda ed evocativa voce femminile per poi ritrasformarsi in funk in un'esplosione di sassofoni e urletti post James Brown. Tutto l’album è bello e lo consiglio a coloro che abbiano voglia di un’esperienza oltre i generi musicali. Ascoltate qui i samples…Che ne dite?
È un raro esempio di cucina hip hop- patchwork-mix-mush che riesce da tanti ingredienti, stravaganti e non, a creare un gusto inedito, buono e non solo "strano" od "originale", perché quello che ho sentito è un effettivo album, maturo, da ascolto, non un esercizio di stile fine a se stesso.
RJ ha stoffa, come bravura paragonabile ad un genio come Four Tet. Consigliato.
