Mi accingo a questa recensione quasi con un senso di sfida. Chi ha letto altre mie recensioni sa che in genere vado a "caccia" di strutture musicali piuttosto oggettive, indipendentemente dall'etichetta o dalla considerazione che un disco si porta dietro. E' il 1979. E' generalmente ritenuto che Carlos Santana in quell'anno abbia terminato la sua missione artistica, prima come una delle rivelazioni dell'era Woodstock, culminante nello straordinario terzo album, poi come adepto del misticismo più raffinato, iniziato con la svolta di "Caravanserai".
Questa del 79' è ritenuta la terza svolta: "purtroppo" quella commerciale. Ma è poi proprio così? L'album di quell'anno, che concretizza questa svolta, è "Marathon", un disco dove appaiono evidenti in ogni caso diverse novità: Debutta alla voce il cantante Alex Ligertwood e il sound si fa decisamente più rock, più duro... ma anche inaspettatamente melodico. E qui sta un po' il riscatto di questo disco. A costo di attirarmi molte critiche posso affermare che questa è un opera più intrigante di ciò che sembri in apparenza. Indubbiamente il buon Carlos non si è mantenuto in seguito a questi livelli, pur nella sua fase commerciale; questo è fuori discussione. Ma quest'album contiene delle tracce di quell'assolutismo, di quell'oggettivazione, che da sempre ritengo fondamentali nella musica. Ed è interessante approfondire un altro po' questo concetto.
In teoria non esiste musica bella o brutta: esistono pezzi in cui la componente oggettiva dell'emozione è più o meno in evidenza. "Marathon" è oggettivamente un buon disco e questo trascende l'etichetta di "commerciale" che gli è stata attaccata; altrimenti, portando all'estremo questo ragionamento, potremmo dire che tutti i capolavori della musica che hanno venduto magari milioni di copie, sono di natura commerciale... Quello che colpisce di "Marathon" è la sua compattezza, non solo musicale, ma anche tra le atmosfere dei brani e il "concept" emotivo dell'album che rimanda a un modo Greco-mitologico e primordiale. E' questo il pregio maggiore dell'album. Diamo un'occhiata ai brani: La Title Track apre il disco in maniera epica e roboante, con le immagini degli atleti greci che corrono nel fuoco come appaiono sulla splendida copertina: E' il mondo antico, l'origine della civiltà. Dopo la parentesi rock di "Lightning In The Sky" dove Ligertwood esprime tutto il suo potenziale, c'è il primo gioiello del disco: "Aqua Marine" racconta nelle sue atmosfere i viaggi di Ulisse, degli Argonauti, ma forse anche quelle spiagge tropicali sulle quali Cristoforo Colombo sbarcò dalle caravelle. La pietra dello scandalo si intitola "You Know That I Love You" il brano che raggiunse i Top 40... Bè, canzone d'amore epica e drammatica, bisogna accettarla per quello che è. Ma l'album si avvale senz'altro dell'accoppiata "Stand Up/Runnin" per certi versi il miglior brano del disco. Ritmica serrata, basso insistente, assolo nell'intermezzo e poi tutto sfocia in "Runnin" dove la chitarra ricama un assolo veramente assoluto. Ora il disco può scendere tranquillamente nel suo versante finale. Dopo la discreta "Summer Lady" si arriva alla terza perla dell'opera: "Stay (Beside Me)" é la luce di un sole estivo dopo un temporale sopra un incontaminato mare Greco. "Hard Times" chiude l'album in maniera dura ma ancora sottilmente epica. Insomma qualcosa di ben più di un album di "transizione".
E' un opera da considerare, secondo me, in maniera isolata, senza pensare che abbia necessariamente inaugurato l'era commerciale di Carlos Santana.
