Provenienti dal terzo polo più attivo, o almeno più interessante, dell'Hardcore americano, cioè Chicago, gli Snapcase rappresentano anche una nuova frontiera, forse l'unica negli ultimi anni, per il Punk-Hardcore. La rappresentano prima di tutto dal punto di vista lirico e "filosofico": superati infatti gli interessi sociali degli indiscussi maestri Fugazi, gli Snapcase, Straight Edge fino all'osso, raggiungono nella loro musica un'intento quasi ascetico; lo fanno parlando un linguaggio che, con termini quasi religiosi, parla di salvezza dell'anima, di sacrificio, di frustrazione dei desideri, conoscenza interiore, rispetto di se stesso prima che dell'altro, astinenza totale, com'è scritto nell'etica Straight Edge, da alcool e droghe; unico rimedio questo, a detta dei nostri, per salvarsi da una società, quella occidentale, sempre più persa in "falsi" valori o nell'assenza degli stessi.
Ed è la musica che, colonna sonora di una società allo sbaraglio, e "invito" alla salvezza dell'anima, risulta essere, parallelamente ai testi, altrettanto innovativa: prima che violenza sonora, appare infatti inquietante, claustrofobica, spigolosa, angosciosa, perfetta base musicale di un ipotetico film orrorifico o catastrofista.
In termini pratici, una voce urlata, contornata da chitarre acide, noise e psichedeliche, una batteria secca fragorosa e veloce, un brano macabro, frenetico e scizzofrenico, violento ma capace di alternare secondi più intimisti, eppure a maggior ragione cupi e densi.
"Progression Through Unlearning" non è il loro lavoro più innovativo, ma forse è il più completo e non risente ancora della "maniera" che invece si presenterà negli album successivi.
Non per tutti i gusti, ma certo un interessante sottofondo di fine vecchio/inizio nuovo millennio, almeno per chi crede che questo non sia propriamente il miglior mondo possibile.
