Marty: La mia lettera. Allora, tutti quei discorsi che non si devono cambiare gli eventi futuri, la continuità spazio-tempo?
Doc: Beh, ho pensato, chi se ne frega!
Ammetto di aver esitato molto prima di decidermi a scrivere questa recensione, consapevole delle numerose critiche che il nome Stryper avrebbe attirato. Ma poi, come già altre volte in passato, mi sono venute in mente le parole del buon vecchio Doc nel finale del primo capitolo di "Ritorno al futuro", ed eccomi qua.
Gli Stryper (nome tratto da un passo della Bibbia, Isaiah 53:5 "and with his stripes we are healed") sono fra i più famosi esponenti del cosidetto christian (o white) metal, quella corrente di musica heavy (nata nella prima metà degli anni '80, ma anticipata da certo pomp rock dei '70) che unisce a un sound pesante e tagliente, testi di ispirazione cristiana e un'attitudine positiva, in netto contrasto con quel tipo di metal "nero" che proprio in quegli anni andava diffondendosi. Trovata pubblicitaria? Forse, ma perchè prendersela quando anche personaggi come Cronos o Quorthon hanno più volte dichiarato che il loro satanismo tutto pentacoli rovesciati e birra (spero questa non rovesciata...) era solo un pretesto per scioccare?
Siamo nel 1985 e le "api" (celebri i loro costumi di scena a strisce gialle e nere), dopo un eccellente EP che verrà ripubblicato qualche anno dopo con l'aggiunta di due pezzi, giungono al loro primo album intitolato "Soldiers Under Command". La copertina (decisamente ambigua...) ritraeva i nostri, moderni crociati, armati di tutto punto e con alle spalle un furgoncino in stile Big Jim, o, per chi se li ricorda, Tansor 5.
Copertina di cattivo gusto a parte, nel disco (ottimamente prodotto da un grandissimo Michael Wagener) un poderoso riffing di chiara estrazione heavy/power si sposa alla perfezione con la voce potente e sicura di Michael Sweet (che alle mie orecchie suona, o meglio canta, come una versione "metallizzata" di Dennis DeYoung degli Styx) autore di taglienti acuti come di delicate ed eteree linee melodiche (e che non manca di stupirci anche come chitarrista).
Proprio il talentuoso Michael marchia a fuoco autentici brani killer (ovviamente a fin di bene) come la title track, introdotta da un potentissimo riff armonizzato di priestiana memoria, o "The Rock That Makes Me Roll", brano epico e melodico, quasi power, ricco di pregevoli interventi solisti del chitarrista Oz Fox e del già citato Michael Sweet. Naturalmente non mancano momenti più "leggeri" come nella dinamica "Makes Me Wanna Sing", con quell'inizio "rubato" da "Running Wild" dei Judas Priest (verrà ripreso anche da Adrian Smith in "The Wicker Man"!) o in "Together Forever", un rock n' roll impreziosito da un gustoso assolo del simpatico (?) Oz Fox. Ricordiamo anche un tuonante Robert Sweet (fratello di Michael) alla batteria, e un preciso Tim Gaines al basso. Malinconiche note di pianoforte introducono invece la strepitosa ballad "Together As One" cantata in maniera impeccabile da un Michael Sweet da brivido, per un brano che potrebbe intenerire anche un fan dei Marduk. Di tutt'altro registro la successiva "Surrender", a mio avviso uno dei brani migliori del disco, dove ancora una volta i nostri non nascondono di essere devoti più al prete di Giuda che a Gesù. Il brano, il cui inizio ricorda un po' nientemeno che "The Hellion", vede nuovamente protagonista la chitarra di un eccezionale Oz Fox in uno dei suoi migliori assoli di sempre (da notare quel caratteristico modo di colpire la leva del vibrato che un certo Petrucci "inventerà" anni dopo). Chiude il disco "Battle Hymn Of The Republic" meglio nota come "Glory, Glory Hallelujah" rielaborata in chiave metal e con un Michael Sweet da applauso che ci saluta declamando la sua fede.
Quella degli Stryper è una religiosità tutta americana, eccessiva e pacchiana se vogliamo, ma, anche per questo, perfettamente in linea con la loro attitudine rock n' roll. Una religiosità presente nei testi ma mai ostentata nel look o a livello iconografico, a differenza di molti loro "anti-colleghi" più o meno coetanei: niente tuniche o croci "non rovesciate" sulla copertina per intenderci! Unica concessione, l'ormai famoso rituale del lancio di Bibbie dal palco (vuoi mettere una Bibbia autografata da Oz Fox?).
Nel bene o nel male (?) se oggi ha un senso parlare di white metal lo si deve proprio a questi quattro ragazzi/missionari e, soprattutto, alla loro incredibile bravura.
