Strani ragazzi questi Supergrass: non prendono niente sul serio, si divertono e fanno divertire, poi, cosa ben più importante, sanno suonare e scrivere belle canzoni, eppure non riescono mai a convincere la critica musicale, perdendo così una buona parte di ascoltatori che meriterebbero sicuramente.
Strana storia quella dei Supergrass: venir proiettati da tutte le riviste britanniche sotto una scritta che dice "The next BEST thing" appena pubblicato l'album di debutto, salvo poi essere dimenticati anche dall'NME che per poco non porta in gloria pure Cristina D'Avena.
Uscito nel 1997 In It For The Money è sicuramente un bel disco, vario e accattivante, ma di sicuro non un capolavoro.
La musica di questo eccentrico terzetto (ora quartetto con l'entrata nella band del cugino del cantante) ha sempre seguito un binario ben preciso: punk non troppo arrabbiato, anzi, addolcito con l'inserimento di strumenti a fiato, ballate acustiche, ma anche chitarre distorte e velocissime che accompagnano la voce graffiante del cantante, con in più assoli di piano e sonorità crude che fanno molto seventies.
"Sun Hits The Sky" è la classica supergrass-song: testo scemotto "I wanna live where the sun hits the sky/ I'll be a doctor/ I am a doctor/ I'm on my way...", chitarre sparate a tutta birra (nel vero senso della parola) direzione punk rock, salvo l'intermezzo etnico con bonghi e pianole per far respirare Gaz Coombes, notoriamente non proprio un'atleta col bel fisico.
Si può dire, con buona probabilità di non essere derisi troppo, che i Supergrass sono i Libertines allo stato embrionale, con una tecnica più rozza, meno diretti, ma con sonorità talvolta più morbide e belle, altrettanto casinari e abili nel portare una pop song banalissima ad un buon livello di rock 'n' roll.
Strano a dirlo, per un gruppo che nasce prettamente elettrico, ma tra le canzoni di "IIFTM" che meritano di più ci sono due ballate, "Late In The Day" e "It's Not Me" (pieno stile brit-pop ma solo in questo caso), dove mancano solo gli archi per far preoccupare i Gallagher.
Buona band questa dei Supergrass e che si fotta l'NME (tanto c'è il de-baser)!
