Se non sai il francese, o se conosci giusto le parole "madame" e "trezeguet", entrare in un qualsiasi negozio di dischi di Parigi e spiegare al commesso che saresti interessato ad acquistare "un disco di qualche artista francese alternativo", può essere un'impresa ardua. Poi capita che, all'ennesimo tentativo, a servirti sia una bella ragazza in altrettanto bella t-shirt dei Pantera, e a quel punto tu ti senti un pò più vicino alla meta e ti lasci sfuggire un rischioso suggerimento come "vorrei qualcosa... like Radiohead"...
Eccolo qua! Syd Matters, al suo secondo album ufficiale dopo "A Whisper And A Sigh" del 2003, "il ponte tra Nick Drake, Radiohead e Robert Wyatt" come ho letto non ricordo più dove. Con i miei dubbi (se Matters è un ponte, Wyatt è la muraglia cinese che attraversa il secondo novecento) affronto le dodici tracce che compongono il disco e tutto sommato trovo che Matters potrebbe avere ragione, che un giorno saremo in grado di presentire le difficoltà e magari le supereremo con la tranquillità che ci infonde la sua musica, con la limpidezza dei suoi arrangiamenti. E' come se Tom Yorke smettesse di essere paranoico, personalmente sarei molto più in pace col mondo.
Certo, non ho trovato il "downward spiral" dell'underground francese, come forse speravo, ma ho conosciuto un artista sincero, che ha il dono della misura e della pacatezza, forse non un talento compositivo ma sicuramente un orecchio raffinato, a metà strada tra l'immediatezza dei folk-singers e le raffinatezze delle moderne produzioni elettroniche.
