Eccola di nuovo, la sorellastra di Kristin Hersh con un passato nei Throwing Muses che aveva lasciato per una breve parentesi con le Breeders (con Kim Deal) per poi formare Belly, sua esclusiva creatura, con un grandissimo disco d'esordio, "Star" ed un meno bello secondo episodio, "King". Pure questo secondo disco solista è meno bello del precedente, quel "Lovesongs for Underdogs" del 1997 che continuava il discorso delle Belly, canzoni euforiche, melodiche, perfetto indie pop ("Pretty Deep", "The Bright Light") costruite come filastrocche sognanti che poi esplodevano in isteria euforica. Bellissime. Tutte. Ci entusiasmano ogni volta. Il disco nuovo prende però un' altra via, canzoni lente quasi cantautorali, tante collaborazioni, fra cui Bill Janowitz, dei Buffalo Tom, atmosfere cupe, riverberate, con un eccessivo virtuosismo vocale che a tratti ricorda i colleghi di etichetta 4AD, i Cocteau Twins, con la meravigliosa e folle incantatrice Liz Frazer. Questo disco non ci soddisfa, È più difficile, contorto lontano dalla perfezione pop di quasi tutte le sue produzioni della Donelly. "The Shadow" invece sembra una canzone dei Portishead, a cominciare dalla spettrale batteria... Preferiamo il precedente "Lovesongs..." La aspettiamo a presto con un nuovo nome ed un nuovo grandissimo esordio.
