Nel triennio aureo 1966-1968 per la musica d’oltremanica, i Troggs (band proveniente dalla cittadina di Andover, nella campagna rurale dell’Hampshire) realizzarono una serie di canzoni che straordinariamente anticipavano di un decennio buono, molte delle istanze musicali che non avevano ancora visto la luce.
Ricordati principalmente per i singoli che raggiunsero il numero uno nelle classifiche di vendita su entrambe le sponde dell’Atlantico, vedi il lascivo proto-punk dell’anthem “Wild Things”, la demente hit-single “I Can’t Control Myself” o i brani più marcatamente pop come la splendida ballata acustica “Love Is All Around” o la floreale “With A Girl Like You”; ma è nelle tracce meno conosciute di questa raccolta (ad onor del vero completamente priva di qualsiasi informazione biografica) che si trovano vere e proprie sorprese stupefacenti come il seminale hard-rock di “Little Pretty Thing” che strizza l’occhio anche alla nascente scena glam, il pop colto di “Anyway That You Want Me”, dove la voce nasale di Reg Presley disegna strane melodie su un tappeto musicale di forte matrice Kinks (non a caso il loro produttore Larry Page, arrivava dall’entourage del gruppo di Ray Davies); o l’incedere surf delle chitarre di “Strange Movies”, in un brano che omaggia tanto il santone Duane Eddy quanto tutta l’iconografia dei B-Movies per teenagers alluppati che circolavano nelle sale cinematografiche meno à-la page.
Ma fino a questo punto siamo nella “normalità” di una band molto ispirata e talentuosa… ma con “Feels Like A Woman” ed “I Don’t” i Troggs tracciano nitidamente la strada che porta il garage delle origini alla forma evoluta più “noise” che esploderà negli States in gruppi come The Stooges o MC5… e nello stesso tempo anticipano anche l’esplosione del fenomeno punk di fine ‘70 dove “Black Bottom” disegna il modello da cui i Clash partiranno per costruire la loro opera, e la loro versione dalla famosissima “Save The Last Dance For Me” è l’abbecedario sul quale i Ramones hanno imparato come trasfigurare il rock ‘n’ roll delle origini.
"Widge You” è la commistione fra il southern- ed il country-rock di gruppi come The Allman Brothers Band ed Eagles, fino ad arrivare agli ZZ Top e nemmeno una certa indie anni ottanta viene tralasciata, per cui “Last Night” parte come un esercizio psichedelico diverso dal solito ed arriva a toccare la dilatazione dei R.E.M. (che avranno ad omaggiare i Troggs con una cover sentita di “Love Is All Around”) o le costruzioni armoniche di The Rain Parade e Teenage Funclub, rintracciabili anche nella più scanzonata “Hot Days”.
