Dopo la pubblicazione di un EP ed il singolo “I Decline", a metà Agosto c'è stato il debutto ufficiale di questo terzetto proveniente da Glasgow, con un album estremamente fisico e viscerale, in un'atmosfera cupa e nostalgica a dispetto delle sonorità in gioco.
Bellissime le voci, spesso sussurrate alla Gregor Samsa, ma mai monocordi, cantate su una musica sporca alla Unkle ed a volte quasi tribale. L'elettronica, che fa decisamente la sua parte, non è fine a se stessa, ma è al servizio delle melodie, tanto che il ricordo al recente "Eraser" di Thom Yorke non può non essere menzionato (e quindi ai Radiohead).
Ma gli Union Of Knives principalmente giocano sia sul contrasto creato tra le loro distorsioni musicali ed i vocalizzi tremolanti, sia su riff tanto ossessivi quanto coinvolgenti, in un mix che si lascia ascoltare con grande facilità. Infatti le 11 tracce dell'album sono assai orecchiabili, ma "Violence & Birdsong" curiosamente rimane un album pervaso di oscurità e gelo, malgrado le voci “calde” e le palpitanti percussioni elettroniche di McClean, che riescono a volte ad arrivare al limite della dance.
Certamente non si raggiunge la creatività dei Guillemots (cosa difficilissima), ma questo è un debutto ben sopra la media e che lascia sperare.
