"Nude" è il terzo lavoro dei Vast, la one man band di Jon Crosby. Il disco è l'unione degli episodi migliori di due dischi non ufficiali, "Turquoise" e "Crimson", resi disponibili solo su Internet. Nonostante possa sembrare figlio di un lavoro di assemblaggio, il disco suona comunque molto omogeneo. È però forse la prima discesa sulla terra di un gruppo, o meglio un artista, che sin'ora sembrava su un altro pianeta. I toni del disco sono molto tristi, forse in linea con una certa mancanza di popolarità del progetto che pure avrebbe tutte le carte in regola per uscire fuori dall'anonimato e issarsi a realtà di primordine nel rock melodico contemporaneo. Lo dimostrerebbe da sola "Don't Take Your Love Away", una melodia da brivido, accompagnata dal piano e alcuni beat elettronici. Un episodio di magnificenza compositiva e ispirazione che farebbe la gioia di tante orecchie e tanti cuori, se solo avesse avuto lo spazio meritato. Le dodici canzoni qui presenti offrono una sintesi della musica di due gruppi che hanno rappresentato qualcosa per Crosby. Echi degli U2 vengono fuori dall'ascolto di "Thrown Away" (ricollegabile al primo periodo della band irlandese) e da "Turquoise" (che non avrebbe sfigurato su "Achtung Baby"). Sono invece tributi ai Cure "I Need To Say Goodbye", "Japanese Fantasy" e "Candle".
Il tono generale del lavoro è comunque molto malinconico. Negli episodi più energici si avverte appena, ma altrove il senso di tristezza è straziante: "Lost" soprattutto, ma anche "Winter In My Heart", sono colpi al cuore a cui è difficile sottrarsi. Il distacco dal senso di gioia di "Music For People" è evidente e dalle aperture ariose di quel disco si passa ad un certo senso di soffocamento che qui si percepisce appena, ma c'è, e diventa sempre più inesorabile con lo scorrere dei pezzi. Un lento soffocamento e una dolce morte, comunque. Alla fine di tutto c'è un episodio fuori fuoco rispetto al resto, "Desert Garden", un brano acustico registrato in presa diretta, dove la voce e l'anima di Jon Crosby si mettono appunto a "nudo": adesso potete fare di lui ciò che volete.
Amatelo od odiatelo. Io però non posso fare a meno di implorarvi di scegliere la prima ipotesi. Per il bene del vostro cuore. . .
