Jon Crosby ricavò il materiale per la pubblicazione di "Nude", terzo lavoro dei Vast risalente al 2004, attraverso una selezione di brani fatta da due dischi non ufficiali, "Turquoise" e "Crimson", prima disponibili solo in rete.
Nel 2006 i due dischi vengono pubblicati integralmente e se l'operazione potrebbe apparire inutile o puramente commerciale, il valore del "doppio disco" fa sì che si rivaluti interamente anche ciò che era stato "Nude". Il terzo disco infatti, pur contenendo alcuni episodi memorabili e un'invidiabile qualità di insieme, sembrava mancare di quel "quid" che aveva reso unici "Visual Audio Sensory Theater" e "Music For People". La veste profondamente malinconica e intimista di quell'album sembrava poi indice di un abbandono da parte di Crosby delle sonorità più aggressive che avevano caratterizzato gli esordi.
Questo "Turquoise & Crimson" ci restituisce invece una band, e un artista, nel pieno delle sue potenzialità e della sua variegata personalità. Evidentemente "Nude" era stato pensato come album doppio, e aver dovuto scartare dei brani ha reso il tutto imperfetto. È poi vero che la scelta operata da Crosby ha privilegiato canzoni tristi e dai toni musicalmente pacati, inserendo solo qualche brano più aggressivo. Nei due dischi, oltre ad ascoltare versioni demo di brani già noti, si possono sentire anche pezzi inediti, alcuni dei quali splendidi, tanto da farci chiedere perché siano stati scartati in favore di altri. Il primo disco, "Turquoise", si apre col brano da cui prende il titolo, riproposizione quasi fedele di quello molto energico che apriva "Nude". Seguono "Ecstasy" e "Be With Me", prodotte in maniera leggermente diversa rispetto a quel disco. Di "Thrown Away" invece si fa preferire la versione già nota mentre qui le parti acustiche sono maggiormente in primo piano, e il suo splendido inizio strumentale appare ancora in una veste approssimativa. "Don't Take Your Love Away" è identica a quella già sentita su "Nude" e d'altronde, essendo un brano nato perfetto, sarebbe stato uno scempio modificarla (non mi stancherò mai di dire quanto sia bella questa canzone). Con "Falling From The Sky" iniziano le novità e non sono certo sgradite: la ruvidezza delle chitarre ci introduce un pezzo potente che esplode nel ritornello epico e vigoroso. L'anima più rude di Crosby non si era quindi perduta, ce l'aveva solo tenuta nascosta!
"Candle" è leggermente diversa da quella che conosciamo ma il suo sapore "cureano" rimane intatto. "I Woke Up LA" è un altro brano tirato, dall'estetica molto industriale, che si lascia ascoltare. E poi la voce di Crosby non la smette mai di emozionare. "I Can't Say No To You" si sostiene su un basso ancor più potente mentre la conclusiva "Desert Garden", pur rimanendo un brano acustico e spoglio, qui si fregia comunque di un minimo di produzione che la rende più vellutata. "Turquoise" contiene pressoché tutti gli episodi significativi di "Nude", e si apre e chiude nello stesso modo. Ne è quindi una specie di proto-versione con qualche modifica.
"Crimson" invece offre le novità più ghiotte. Si apre con una versione molto più elettronica di "I Need To Say Goodbye", che suona maggiormente aggressiva, per proseguire con due versioni ancora un po' abbozzate di "Lost" e "Winter In My Heart". "All I Found Was You" è invece uno stravolgimento di "Japanese Fantasy", dove l'elettronica si fa massiccia e percuote l'orecchio dell'ascoltatore con costanza. Sicuramente una variante interessante rispetto all'originale. "That's My Boy" è il primo brano completamente inedito di questo secondo disco e ci ritroviamo nelle orecchie uno dei pezzi migliori dell'intera discografia dei Vast. Intro melodico e malinconico, progressiva evoluzione musicale, potenza vocale e strumentale del ritornello, cori bianchi che ondeggiano per tutto il brano: siamo tornati al 1998, a pietre miliari come "Here" e "Pretty When You Cry". Una canzone che è stato davvero un peccato trascurare per "Nude". "Evil Little Girl" è invece un pezzo molto delicato, con archi ed un accompagnamento strumentale che si muove in punta di piedi, ma che, pian piano, ci riempie il cuore delle sue meravigliose note. "Beautifull" è una delle cose più vicine al "pop" che Crosby abbia mai concepito, usando sempre questa parolaccia di tre lettere nella sua accezione più nobile. Ma forse la novità più interessante è "Senorita": un incedere di violini continuo e tagliente accompagna un ritmo sincopato sul quale Crosby disserta i suoi versi con energica noncuranza. "Where It Never Rains" è il momento più sofferto e accorato dell'intero lavoro e riesce a commuovere dopo che precedentemente si era gioito. Il commiato è affidato ad uno splendido brano semi-strumentale che si avvale per le parti vocali solo di alcuni cori: "Goodbye", ed è l'ennesimo capolavoro.
Si chiude un doppio lavoro eccezionale che, probabilmente, se fosse uscito quando doveva nella versione completa, non sarebbe passato inosservato. Per varietà stilistica e tonale "Turquoise & Crimson" rinverdisce i fasti di "Visual Audio Sensory Theater", anche se attraverso due dischi invece che uno. Mantenere lo standard elevato in un album doppio non è semplice, ma Crosby c'è riuscito in pieno. L'unico problema è che ascoltare questo disco dopo aver conosciuto "Nude" lo priva sicuramente di una parte del suo fascino.
