Piccolo preambolo:
anno 1994 Shapes That Go Together esce come singolo in occasione delle olimpiadi invernali a Lilllehammer e gli A-ha terminano il loro Memorial Beach Tour dopo 29 date. I membri degli A-ha iniziano le loro carriere soliste e gli A-ha anche se non ufficialmente si sciolgono. Inaspettatamente nel 1998 sul palco del Nobel Peace Prize come per incanto appaiono insieme Morten Harket, Magne Furuholmen e Paul Waaktaar-Savoy che eseguono un nuovo brano (Summer Moved On) insieme alla mitica The Sun Always Shines On Tv... ha così inizio il nuovo corso della band.
L'album Minor Earth Major Sky vede la luce nel luglio del 2000 e presenta una copertina a mio parere interessantissima e decisamente densa di significati: appare la carlinga di un aereo senza la parte destinata ai passeggeri la coda e le ali... la carlinga in un aereo di linea è la parte che ospita l'aquipaggio ed è solitamente la zona più robusta dell'aereo stesso quasi a voler tagliare i ponti con un passato in cui la band è rimasta appesantita nel suo "volo" da tutta una serie di "passeggeri scomodi", il music business, i media, il peso stesso di essere icone degli anni '80...
L'album parte subito con la title track Minor Earth Major Sky (Furuholmen-Savoy) un brano con una ritmica classic pop con un giro di basso accattivante e sonorità decisamente elettroniche maniacalmente perfette nell'esecuzione; l'atmosfera e anche gli effetti applicati alla voce di Harket danno al brano un suono quasi ovattato. Il video che accompagna il brano è decisamente da vedere... esistono molte versioni diverse di MEMS tra le quali spicca in particolar modo la versione Black Dog mix che da al brano un impronta più "dura".
Little Black Heart (Furuholmen-Savoy) è un brano dalle sonorità pop molto ricercate e curate dove la voce di Morten e i cori creano un atmosfera che definirei malinconica nelle strofe e speranzosa nel ritornello e nella variazione... "dici che andrà meglio che va tutto bene ma non ho mai sentito il buio come questa notte..." che dire: brano stupendo!!!
Velvet (Waaktaar & Lauren Savoy) è un brano scitto in precedenza e pubblicato per la band parallela dei Savoy di Paul e sua moglie Lauren: una ballata pop dolce e sensuale dove la chitarra di Paul accarezza delicatamente le orecchie dell'ascoltatore senza mai strafare e i cori di Lauren accompagnano la voce sempre (forse persino troppo!!!) perfetta di Morten. Da segnalare che il video che accompagna la canzone è decisamente in contrasto con l'atmosfera del brano stesso ma personalmente ho trovato geniale l'idea di fondo del video fortemente ironico anche se ai limiti della sgradevolezza per il tema trattato...
Arriviamo quindi a Summer Moved On (Waaktaar Savoy) riarrangiata per l'album in maniera molto diversa rispetto all'esecuzione del '98; è un brano pop classico dall'atmosfera evocativa con ancora profonde sonorità alettroniche che si miscelano agli strumenti classici in maniera omogenea ma dinamica; la voce di Morten è messa in grande risalto non tanto per la nota tenuta per 20,2 secondi ma quanto per l'interpretazione stessa decisamente emozionante; il video che accompagna il singolo è girato in Spagna; il singolo (il primo estratto da questo album) ha venduto oltre un milione e mezzo di copie e ha contribuito a rilanciare gli a-ha sul mercato internazionale (sopratutto in Germania).
The Sun Never Shone That Day (Paul & Lauren Savoy) è un brano con una ritmica più sostenuta rispetto ai precedenti e con sonorità più genuine per quanto riguarda l'arrangiamento; il brano si spacca fortemente tra strofa e ritornello in un canovaccio tipico e caratteristico per questa band che ci propone sempre qualcosa di originale e (quasi) mai scontato.
To Let You Win (Harket-Haverd Rem) è un interessante esempio dell'evoluzione artistica di Morten Harket: una esecuzione strumentale essenziale e nuda con Morten che canta in tonalità quasi baritonali nella strofa in un brano lento e profondo che si apre solo leggermente nella variazione rimanendo un po' così, sospeso al centro dell'album come un qualcosa che rimane nascosto sommerso cupo.
The Company Man (Furuholmen-Savoy) è una genuina pop song leggera leggera dal ritmo sostenuto, il più classico dei riempitivi con un testo significativamente ironico. Dimenticabile!!!
Thought That It Was You (Harket - Ole Sverre Olsen) evoca sonorità quasi natalizie (sarà forse lo scampanellio? mah!!!) il brano è valido ma personalmente ho trovato non proprio buono l'arrangiamento troppo semplicistico per un altro potenziale buon brano Pop che infatti ha dato il meglio di se nelle versioni eseguite live. Peccato che qualcuno ci abbia voluto mettere per forza lo zampino (Niven Garland?)
I Wish I Cared (Furuholmen) è un piccolo capolavoro! Un brano slow pop completamente elettronico dove tutte le qualità vocali di Morten vengono esaltate dalla scatenata vena creativa di un Magne in stato di grazia capace come pochissimi di sfruttare le moderne tecnologie musicali senza perdere quella umana genuinità compositiva che rende la musica un qualcosa di globale e appetibile a tutti. Il video che accompagna il brano è il primo della storia realizzato completamente in flash. Per me questo brano è magnifico.
Barely Hanging On (Waaktaar Savoy) ops... un tre/quarti genuino nell'arrangiamento ma poco curato e non molto originale sia nell'esecuzione che nel post produzione lasciato un po' così in mezzo all'album quasi senza significato... un riempitivo pop leggero ma ascoltabile.
You'll Never Get Over Me (Waaktaar Savoy) genuina ballata pop con chitarre e basso in evidenza un po' ripetitivo ma gradevole; accompagna ai cori la signora Savoy in maniera gradevole un esecuzione senza troppo impegno ma sempre buona di Harket.
I Won't Forget Her (Waaktaar Savoy) sembra uscita proprio da un B-sides degli anni '80 tutto elettronico in un brano pop molto ripetitivo e senza mordente dove qualcuno si è divertito a cercare di farne una canzone decente non riuscendovi a mio avviso... in tutta onestà la salto a piè pari e la gratterei volentieri via dal CD...
Mary Ellen Makes the Moment Count (Waaktaar Savoy) beh gli A-ha forse non riescono sempre ad azzeccare il singolo ma sono maestri nel sapere chiudere degnamente ogni loro lavoro e anche questa volta lo fanno con una ballata Pop dove la chitarra di Waaktaar la fa da padrona con una ritmica quasi Dylaniana struggente; sembra un classico degli anni '70 che esplode nel ritornello ricordandoci che ormai siamo nel nuovo millennio. Nel finale della canzone comincia a prevalere la tastiera di Magne con un riff maniacale in chiusura accompagnato dalla frase "I Was Around..." ripetuta sino alla chiusura secca che lascia di stucco e con la pelle d'oca almeno me...
L'album ha venduto oltre 2,5 milioni di copie nel mondo, 1 milione solo in Germania dove tra l'altro è riuscito a piazzare tre singoli sempre nei primi dieci in classifica (Summer Moved On, Minor Earth Major Sky e Velvet), è prodotto da Andreas "Boogieman" Herbig e Roland Spremberg e co-prodotto dagli A-ha e Kjetil Bjerkestrand. E' il primo album dove i membri della band non appaiono in copertina.
