Sean Malone è un genio e si contorna solo ed esclusivamente da geni. Il 2000 vede la nascita del nuovo gruppo del fantastico bassista dei "Cynic" che, accompagnato dalla bravissima Danishta Rivero alla voce, Santiago Dobles alla chitarra solistica, Charlie Ekendahl alla chitarra ritmica e Sean Reinert alla batteria e percussioni, ci propone un vero e proprio capolavoro di progressive metal iper tecnico.
Ciò che ci viene offerto in questo fantastico disco è quanto di più diverso sia mai stato suonato da quelli che molti considerano i grandi del prog moderno: dotati di una tecnica fuori dal normale, gli Aghora ci propongono in questo bellissimo debut album "Aghora" 55 minuti di evoluzioni strumentistiche sentite fino ad oggi solo in gruppi quali: Rush, Cynic e Spiral Architect. Il genere suonato, pur essendo ricunducibile al prog iper tecnico è pieno di inserti provenienti dal trash e death americano e anche dal jazz. La track-list è composta da 9 canzoni di durata medio-alta che però non vi stancheranno mai.
L'album si apre con "Immortal Bliss", canzone dai forti richiami trash, che ci mostra tutta la bravura del gruppo, mettendo in primo piano il basso e la splendida voce del mezzo soprano Danishta; la canzone risulta essere molto veloce e complessa, le ritmiche serrate e veloci e assoli a non finire si susseguono in un'amalgama di 4 minuti e 38 secondi. "Satya", seconda track dell' album si presenta come una prog-song molto veloce basata tutta sui soli di basso disegnati da un grandissimo Malone che accompagna la voce, componendo una canzone dai sapori vagamenti orientalegianti. Le chitarre risultano presenti e potenti, la batteria iper-veloce e complessa. L'assolo chitarristico al centro della song è splendido e vi farà capire quanto pochezza tecnica hanno in verità i due gruppi più blasonati del prog: i Dream Theater e i Symphony X.
Passiamo così alla terza canzone del disco: "Trasfiguration": trasfigurazione della perfezione in note musicale, il discorso fatto per le due precedenti canzoni vale anche in questo caso: ciò che ci viene offerto non può che essere considerato capolavoro assoluto. Arriviamo alla quarta traccia: "Frames", la canzone più bella dell'album che può essere idealmente divisa in due parti delle quali la prima più trasheggiante e la seconda assolutamente jazz: è proprio in questo contesto che si vede tutta la bravura della band, che ci offre una valanga di assoli suonati con una classe da mettere paura. Le altre canzoni si muovono più o meno sulle cordinate delle precedenti 4, con l'esclusione della settima track che si presenta come uno strumentale tanto particolare quanto bello, anche se decisamente lungo.
In definitiva questo "Aghora" è da annoverare tra i capolavori massimi del prog più estremo in buona compagnia con i dischi dei Cynic, Rush, Spiral Architect e Gordian Knot.
Ah un consiglio finale, leggete i testi... sono assolutamente fantastici e profondi.

Vi starete chiedendo perché non ho parlato ancora degli Aghora... bèn semplicemente perchè in questo gruppo militano due certi signori quali Sean Reinert e Sean Malone che militavano nei Cynic e che in questo gruppo ripropongono il genere.
È un disco questo indubbiamente dal punto di vista musicale supremo anche se posso capire che a livello di gusti possa piacere tanto o poco.
