'Mercury', pubblicato nel 1993 e prodotto da Mitchell Froom, è sicuramente il disco più importante del songwriting di un Mark Eitzel che riesce nell'intento di dare forma a un progetto profondo e sincero il quale si esplica nel suo divenire in un alternarsi di pezzi folk-pop e claustrofobici che hanno l'intento di portare definitivamente alla luce quella ricerca dello spazio già abbozzata nelle fatiche precedenti.
La voce di Eitzel ci accompagna malinconicamente in tutte e quattordici le tracce e alterna silenzi enigmatici e richieste disperate di comprensione e di amore a sibili elettrici che chiudono il cerchio attorno alla componente che maggiormente domina il tutto, ovvero una emozionalità che raggiunge livelli stranianti e estremamente coinvolgenti: si passa così dalla favolosa intro iniziale di "Gratitude Walks" a pezzi più rockeggianti e veloci come "Challenger" e "Keep Me Around" che fanno da collante alla presenza di un ritornello killer come quello di "If I Had A Hammer".
Degne di nota sono anche le atmosfere quasi torbide di "What Godzilla Said To God When His Name Wasn't Found In The Book Of Life" e tribal-orientali di "Dallas, Airports, Bodybags" e soprattutto le oniriche "Apology For An Accident" e "The Hopes and Dreams of Heaven's 10,000 Whores" che si ricollegano alle due canzoni finali "More Hopes And Dreams" e "Will You Find Me?", pregne di accenti pschidelici che sanciscono la fine di uno degli album più importanti degli anni novanta in un genere ibrido che nel decennio precedente aveva perso quasi interamente il suo splendore.
