Che bellezza che era la prima metà dei '90. Tutti avevano compreso che il death metal aveva già detto quello che doveva dire e quindi bisognava contaminarlo, per tenerlo vivo.
Gli Amorphis, che già col precedente, ottimo "Tales From The Thousand Lakes" avevano fatto parlare di sè in termini di progressive death, arrivano con Elegy alla perfezione formale. I retaggi death si manifestano nelle vocals (almeno il 50% è in growl), in certe partiture più veloci, ma il resto viene direttamente dai gloriosi 70's, sia sotto forma di influenza hard che psycho o prog.
Ogni brano è essenziale e al tempo stesso non banale, con un ricco sostrato di tastiere, e il contrasto fra le clean vocals e i growls (fra i più bassi mai sentiti) impreziosisce il tutto, evitando lo spauracchio della banalità o del già sentito. I testi si ispirano al Kanteletar, raccolta di poemi della tradizione finnica, e aggiungono un gusto antico al tutto.

Purtroppo, come molti altri innovatori della materia death metal di metà anni '90, gli Amorphis decideranno di diventare un gruppetto rock come mille altri, con il pretesto della maturazione e della progressione. Prendetevi "Elegy", e godete.

 Elegy è permeato dalle prime clean vocals di Pasi Koskinen che segnano una svolta nel sound degli Amorphis.

 My Kantele è una di quelle canzoni che, quando parte, attacca il repeat, un brano che vale l’acquisto dell’album.
