Inizialmente lo chiamavano "Street Punk", i ragazzi che uscivano dalle fabbriche inglesi dovevano sfogarsi con qualcosa, bevevano birra e cantavano gli Sham 69. Successivamente lo chiamarono "Punk Oi!" quella musica operaia, antirazziale e radicata palesemente nel sound Jamaicano. Tra i gruppi formati nel periodo troviamo i 4-Skins, Cockney Rejects e tanto per andare al sodo gli Angelic Upstarts.
Dopo un auto-prodotto acquistato dalla Small Wonder Records la band firmò un contratto con la Wonder Brothers che produsse "Teenage Warning".
L'importanza dell'album in questione è immensa, musicalmente impeccabile, dalla sonorità aggressive ed energiche, strumenti che non graffiano, ma scorrono con adrenalina senza cadere in ritmiche troppo sbattute e veloci. Punk dello stile anni settanta eseguito da musicisti coscienziosi, privo di incongruenze e ricco di sfaccettature che rendono le canzoni importanti gioielli della musica in generale.
Non posso che citare "We are the people" dove un forte messaggio viene raccontato sia dalla linea vocale che dal rancore nostalgico delle chitarre, non sentiamo il classico punk che ci trita epilettici accordi da combattimento, ma sentiamo sensibili arpeggi distorti e linee di basso così imponenti che non avere brividi durante l'ascolto sembra impossibile. "Little Tower" ad esempio riesce a raccontarci tramite pizzicate di corde e strazianti lamenti del cantante l'odio profondo verso la polizia, gli assoli in questa canzone hanno la stessa capacità di comunicazione di una parte vocale, cosa strana per il genere devo sottolineare. Si deve comunque dire che in Mensi si riesce a trovare una carica difficilmente rintracciabile nei vocalist degli altri complessi, stonato e incazzato in molte parti, spaventosamente sensibile in altre.
Provo una stima indescrivibile in tutto quello che è contenuto in questo disco, so che molta musica punk hardcore può essere futile, giocosa, diciamo più adatta ad ascoltatori adolescenziali, ma l'attualità e il tocco che questo lavoro contiene mi fa credere che "Teenage Warning" è uno dei principali dischi di tutti i tempi. È inutile stare a sprecare tante parole per una cosa che tutti dovrebbero avere e credo che sia proprio per la sua perfezione che non riesco a descriverlo con tantissime parole.
