Mi sembrava strano che nessuno avesse ancora recensito quest'ultimo album dei nostri cari brasiliani, così da buon principiante new entry quale sono, ho deciso di scrivere qualcosa.
'Aurora Consurgens' è uscito a fine ottobre 2006 -mi pare- ed è stato oggetto di discussioni per il cambiamento che gli Angra avevano intrapreso a partire dal loro penultimo album con l'arrivo del nuovo vocal Edu Falaschi. Così per curiosità sono andato dal tanto fidato Sound Cave ad acquistare il cd, e devo dire con un certo sospetto di rimanere deluso.
Una volta ascoltato tutto per bene non ho potuto che confermare quanto è stato detto dalle recensioni -positive e non- lette qua e là su internet. Il gruppo ha subito forti cambiamenti, non c'è che dire. Lo si può constatare subito dal brano d'apertura "The Course Of Nature" e, badate bene, gli Angra non hanno certo perso del tutto il loro inecceppibile stile, nonostante si siano evoluti. In questa -ottima- track d'apertura l'intro risulta essere molto suggestiva e attraente, e quando le chitarre dell'accoppiata formidabile Kiko-Rafael attaccano con riff taglienti non rimango affatto deluso. Segue "The Voice Commanding You", incredibilmente coinvolgente, ben orchestrata e marcatamente puntata verso lo speed; le tastiere danno un ritocco al tutto e la voce di Falaschi si adatta a questa nuova avvincente performance. Ottimo. Passiamo ad "Ego Painted Grey" dove gli Angra sfoderano tutta la loro drammaticità nei testi: un altro importante cambiamento nell'esprimersi. Il brano è molto prog, vario, ma soprattutto cupo, e mai ho sentito la band proporre un sound così carico di variazioni. Ma rimane un punto fondamentale per il cd. La quarta traccia è "Breaking Ties"… ballad lenta, dolce, abbastanza delicata… Ritornello orecchiabile… Direi quasi ottima ma di certo non da gridare al capolavoro. Le due tracce seguenti, "Salvation: Suicide" e "Window To Nowhere" sono le più deludenti -perdonate la rima- e prive di innovazione, solo semplici brani power di roba trita e ritrita. Molto interessante è "So Near So Far" dal forte gusto orientale, il ritornello estremamente avvincente; un rapido decollo dal brusco atterraggio compiuto dai brani precedenti. Meno male!… La terzultima traccia "Passing By" è un'altra sperimentazione di tastiere elettroniche e varie cariche di effetti. Il penultimo brano "Scream Your Heart Out" fatica a procedere, i suoni sono troppo macchinosi, l'entusiasmo degrada non poco… Ma gli Angra dovrebbero smettere di proporre troppi cambiamenti o rischiano di mandare in cancrena la loro carriera. Fortunatamente il brano d'addio "Abandoned Fate" è semplice e allo stesso tempo fantastico: la struttura è genuina, un vero e proprio sfogo di chitarra acustica e la melodia della voce di Edu -anche se non può competere con il nostro Matos- spicca notevolmente.
In breve, gli Angra sono riusciti a proporre numerosi e notevoli cambiamenti , qualche volta distaccandosi troppo dai loro schemi tradizionali, e hanno raggiunto un livello quasi discreto ma sicuramente non all'altezza dei lavori precedenti -e basta con 'ste rime-. Non mi hanno deluso, ma da un gruppo come il loro mi aspettavo qualcosa di decisamente più incisivo.
